Christian Horner has emphasized the pivotal role Max Verstappen played in Red Bull’s 2024 recovery, dismissing previous claims that the team ignored the Dutch driver’s feedback during their mid-season struggles. Despite enduring a winless stretch and battling severe car issues, Verstappen’s input proved instrumental in guiding the team back to form.
A season of struggles
Red Bull’s dominance in Formula 1 came under threat in 2024, with McLaren and Ferrari overtaking the Austrian outfit in performance. The RB20’s balance issues left Verstappen struggling, leading to his longest winless streak in four years.
Verstappen previously claimed his feedback was overlooked during the car’s development, but Horner insists the team relied heavily on the reigning champion’s insights, especially when Red Bull was on the back foot.
“At that point, you rely very heavily on your driver feedback,” Horner explained. “Max really stepped up. He spent countless hours with engineers, pointing out issues that didn’t always correlate with the tools, but it was his feedback that unraveled some of the problems.”
The turning point
By the latter half of the season, Red Bull began to address the RB20’s deficiencies, crediting Verstappen’s detailed analysis and relentless input. Horner acknowledged that Verstappen’s collaboration with the engineers helped pinpoint balance and aerodynamic issues, allowing Milton Keynes to implement effective upgrades.
“Max’s feedback was invaluable,” Horner said. “We trusted it, and it started to unwrap some of the issues. Without his contributions, we might not have recovered the way we did.”
The perfect storm
Horner described the 2024 slump as a “perfect storm” of challenges, including limitations with Red Bull’s aging wind tunnel. These factors compounded the team’s struggles, with Horner admitting they may have reached the tunnel’s limits.
“Perhaps we reached some of the limitations of our tunnel,” he conceded. “It was a wake-up call for us as a team.”
Despite the hurdles, Verstappen managed to bounce back spectacularly, securing his fifth world championship and proving why he remains indispensable to Red Bull.
Verstappen’s value to Red Bull
Verstappen’s contributions extend far beyond his driving skills. His technical acumen and ability to translate on-track sensations into actionable insights make him a critical asset for Red Bull. Horner made it clear that Verstappen’s feedback will never again be underestimated.
“Max is highly important on and off the track. His feedback gave us a better understanding of the car’s issues and allowed us to bounce back. Ignoring him would be a mistake we won’t repeat.”
What’s next for Red Bull?
As the team looks ahead to 2025, Red Bull is focused on upgrading its tools and processes to avoid another slump. With Verstappen leading the charge, Horner’s squad is determined to reclaim its dominance and fend off challenges from McLaren, Ferrari, and other rivals.
For Verstappen, 2024 was a reminder of the challenges that come with being at the top—and the importance of persistence, collaboration, and trust in overcoming adversity.
