The 2025 Chili Bowl Nationals promises a star-studded showdown, featuring the biggest names in motorsport. From NASCAR champions like Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell to powerhouse teams like Keith Kunz Motorsports (KKM) fielding a massive 16-car fleet, the stage is set for an epic battle. But amidst the giants, one former champion is preparing to fight a different kind of race.

Tanner Thorson, the 2022 Chili Bowl winner, is entering the event with a modest single-car operation led by himself and Ace McCarthy. While the odds seem stacked against him, Thorson is embracing the challenge, fully aware of the uphill battle he faces.

The Goliaths: NASCAR Stars and KKM’s Juggernaut

Kyle Larson, driving the No. 1K for Silva Motorsports, headlines the list of heavyweights. A two-time Chili Bowl champion, Larson’s relentless form and adaptability make him a top contender. Joining him is Christopher Bell, a three-time Chili Bowl winner, returning under the formidable Keith Kunz Motorsports umbrella.

KKM’s fleet includes standout talents like Buddy Kofoid, Tanner Carrick, and Cannon McIntosh—all capable of stealing the spotlight. Meanwhile, NASCAR’s Kyle Busch makes his Chili Bowl debut after impressing at the Tulsa Shootout with multiple heat race wins. For Thorson, these rivals represent the ultimate test.

The Underdog’s Struggles and Strengths

Thorson is no stranger to the Chili Bowl, having lifted the coveted Golden Driller trophy in 2022. However, his single-car team faces a significant disadvantage compared to operations like KKM, which benefit from a vast pool of data and collaboration among their 16 drivers.

In a candid interview with journalist Matt Weaver, Thorson laid bare the challenges:
“I have struggled with not having another car, another person to lean on. It’s hard to beat a group of people when there are 15 cars having a lot of input in the team—versus me and Ace by ourselves.”

Yet, Thorson remains optimistic. He believes his underdog status showcases the team’s capabilities:
“It also shows how good we can be too by not having that. If we can perform at this level with what we have, it’s a testament to the work we put in.”

Teamwork and Adaptability

Thorson credits his small but dedicated crew, including micro-racer Connor Lee and Ace McCarthy. Despite McCarthy’s limited racing experience, Thorson values his unique perspective:
“Ace doesn’t necessarily have the best feel because he doesn’t race enough. But when he notices something, it brings more attention to me. If he’s feeling that, then there’s something there. It’s not a knock on him—it’s just the dynamic we work with.”

This unconventional approach emphasizes adaptability and trust, key components for a team competing on a shoestring budget against giants.

A Field Packed with Potential

As Thorson gears up for the 2025 Chili Bowl, his competition reads like a who’s who of motorsport excellence. The combination of NASCAR stars, powerhouse teams, and talented up-and-comers ensures that this year’s Chili Bowl will be a battle for the ages.

Despite the odds, Thorson has proven he can thrive in this environment. His ability to overcome the odds and outsmart bigger teams will undoubtedly make him a fan favorite and a dangerous competitor on the track.

Can the Underdog Prevail?

For Tanner Thorson, the 2025 Chili Bowl Nationals is about more than just racing. It’s about proving that heart and skill can stand toe-to-toe with resources and numbers. As he takes to the dirt alongside motorsport’s elite, Thorson’s journey serves as a reminder that, in racing, the size of the team isn’t always what matters—it’s the size of the fight in the driver.
