Max Verstappen’s Future in F1: Red Bull Christian Horner Hints at Early Exit Amid Paddock ‘Circus’

Max Verstappen: “If we continue like this, I won’t be champion next year. It’s as simple as that,”

SINGAPORE, SINGAPORE - SEPTEMBER 20: Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing talks with Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner in the garage during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Singapore at Marina Bay Street Circuit on September 20, 2024 in Singapore, Singapore. The Formula 1 world might not have Max Verstappen for as long as fans and rivals expect. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has revealed that the reigning world champion, known for his dominant performances and unfiltered opinions, could consider leaving the sport earlier than anticipated. The reason? The relentless “noise and circus” surrounding the F1 paddock.

At just 27, Verstappen has already cemented his place as one of F1’s greats, but the pressures and controversies of the 2024 season have led to speculation about how long he will stay in the sport.

The “Circus” That May Push Verstappen Out

Formula 1 is often described as a “traveling circus,” where drama and rivalries are just as intense off the track as on it. For Verstappen, the past season proved especially challenging. Clashes with key competitors, ongoing debates about a perceived “British bias” in the sport, and mounting frustrations with the political aspects of F1 have taken a toll.

Horner didn’t mince words when addressing the Dutchman’s possible early exit. “Some of the noise and circus around Formula 1 doesn’t sit comfortably with him,” Horner admitted. “As long as he is getting enjoyment out of what he does, he’ll do it. But as soon as that enjoyment drops, he’s got the strength of character to say, ‘You know what, I’m going to go and drive GTs next year.’”

Other Passions Luring Verstappen Away

Horner highlighted Verstappen’s diverse interests outside of Formula 1 as another factor that could influence his decision. The Dutchman enjoys racing GT cars, simulators, and LMP cars, embracing a more “old-school” racing mentality that contrasts with the modern F1 spectacle.

While Verstappen’s current Red Bull contract runs until the end of the 2028 season, Horner acknowledged that contracts don’t guarantee longevity in the sport. “We are very grateful that he is our driver, and hopefully that will remain the case for many years to come, at least until 2028,” he said. “But nobody has a crystal ball.”

Could Mercedes Come Calling?

Adding fuel to the fire is Mercedes’ rumored interest in Verstappen. With Red Bull’s performance waning in the latter half of 2024, whispers of a potential Verstappen-Mercedes partnership have gained momentum. While the Dutchman has shown unwavering loyalty to Red Bull, the allure of a new challenge with a top-tier rival could be hard to resist if Red Bull fails to regain its dominance.

Red Bull’s 2025 Challenges

As Verstappen’s future hangs in the balance, Red Bull faces its own uphill battle heading into the 2025 season. Personnel changes within the team and preparations for the 2026 regulation overhaul are stretching resources. The team must balance immediate performance improvements with long-term development, all while keeping Verstappen motivated and engaged.

Will Verstappen Walk Away?

For now, Verstappen remains committed to Red Bull and Formula 1, but Horner’s candid comments suggest that the Dutchman is not bound by tradition or expectation. His readiness to pursue other racing passions if the “fun” of F1 disappears speaks volumes about his personality and priorities.

With the 2025 season fast approaching, the spotlight will remain firmly on Verstappen—not just for his on-track brilliance but for the growing question of how long he’ll continue to grace the grid.
