Jack Doohan Faces Early Pressure as Alpine Weighs Options for 2025

Jack Doohan (AUS) Alpine F1 Team Reserve Driver. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 9, Canadian Grand Prix, Friday 7th June 2024. Montreal, Canada.

The spotlight is firmly on Jack Doohan as the 21-year-old Australian prepares for his first full Formula 1 season with Alpine in 2025. However, before the season has even begun, rumblings of uncertainty over his seat are already making waves in the paddock.

Doohan’s Path to Alpine

Doohan was promoted to Alpine’s F1 team following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2024, stepping into the seat vacated by Esteban Ocon. The young Australian has been part of Alpine’s junior program, and his promotion signaled the team’s intent to bet on youthful talent. However, his debut season is shaping up to be a high-stakes gamble.

Alpine had initially targeted Williams-bound Carlos Sainz to partner their star driver, but when that deal fell through, Doohan got his opportunity. Despite his impressive junior career, his promotion came amid whispers of alternative options, including rising star Franco Colapinto.

Colapinto’s Meteoric Rise

Williams’ Franco Colapinto stunned the F1 world in 2024, scoring points in a challenging car after replacing Logan Sargeant mid-season. The Argentine’s performances earned him widespread acclaim, with rumors even linking him to Red Bull’s talent program.

While Colapinto ultimately stayed at Williams, Alpine’s Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore is reportedly a huge admirer of the young driver. This led Alpine to sign Colapinto as a reserve driver for 2025, a move that puts additional pressure on Doohan to perform.

The Briatore Factor

Flavio Briatore’s no-nonsense approach to team management is well-documented, and his influence has already led to significant shake-ups at Alpine. Reports suggest Briatore sees Colapinto as a future star and may not hesitate to replace Doohan should the Australian fail to deliver.

Doohan’s situation has been further complicated by Briatore’s public admiration for Colapinto, which could leave the rookie feeling undermined before even turning a wheel in 2025.

A Make-or-Break Season

Doohan faces an uphill battle to secure his place at Alpine beyond 2025. While the team is likely to give him a fair opportunity, the looming presence of Colapinto and Briatore’s reputation for swift decisions could make even minor missteps costly.

Alpine’s decision to keep Colapinto in their orbit sends a clear message: performance will dictate everything. If Doohan struggles during his rookie campaign, the team may look to the Argentine as a mid-season replacement or for 2026.

The Road Ahead

For Jack Doohan, the task is simple yet monumental: deliver consistent performances on track and match his experienced teammate. His ability to manage the pressure and seize this opportunity will determine whether he cements his place in F1 or faces an early exit.

Meanwhile, Colapinto’s presence as Alpine’s reserve driver ensures the team has a ready-made alternative waiting in the wings. With Briatore pulling the strings, the stakes for Doohan couldn’t be higher. The 2025 season will likely determine his F1 future—and perhaps even Alpine’s long-term trajectory.
