Jos Verstappen has finally addressed the long-standing and controversial story of leaving his son, Max Verstappen, at a gas station after a disappointing karting performance. The former F1 driver clarified the incident, revealing that while the story has been exaggerated, his parenting approach indeed involved some tough love.

Setting the Record Straight

Jos denied ever abandoning his son at a gas station, as previously rumored, but admitted to a week-long silent treatment following the disappointing race. According to Jos, this method of discipline was not considered “too harsh” by Max, who later acknowledged how such moments shaped his mindset and resilience for Formula 1.

“I think it’s time to clear up that story,” Jos explained. “The truth is: I didn’t leave him there. I just didn’t speak to him for a week. Was that too harsh? Not according to Max. He felt that my attitude had prepared him better for Formula 1.”

Building Mental Fortitude

Jos believed that these unorthodox parenting methods equipped Max with the mental toughness needed to handle F1’s high-pressure environment and individuals like Red Bull’s notoriously demanding Helmut Marko.

“That’s why dealing with Helmut Marko, who is also known as an extremely tough guy, didn’t bother him anymore,” Jos said. “He also appreciates the fact that we kept training with the kart on dry tires on a wet track. I only sense gratitude from him when it comes to his childhood with me.”

The Real Max Verstappen

Beyond his track exploits, Max Verstappen is known for his blunt, unfiltered approach to public speaking—something Jos sees as a source of pride. Despite his aggressive racing style, Jos revealed a contrasting side to Max’s personality, describing him as calm, balanced, and harmony-seeking in private.

“The way Max behaves in public, how he speaks his mind without sugar-coating – that makes me just as extremely proud of my son as his athletic achievements,” said Jos. “On the track, he is unconditionally aggressive, as he needs to be. But in private, he is a calm, extremely balanced, friendly soul. Someone who seeks harmony, listens carefully, and then draws his conclusions.”

Max’s Dominance in Formula 1

Max Verstappen, now a four-time consecutive F1 World Champion, has solidified his place as one of the sport’s most dominant drivers. Despite the intense upbringing and Red Bull’s high-pressure environment, Max’s performances have only soared. At just 27 years old, he is on track to further rewrite the record books.

As the F1 world anticipates another season with Verstappen at the helm, Jos Verstappen’s influence and their shared journey continue to stand as a testament to the drive and sacrifices behind Max’s relentless pursuit of greatness.
