Alpine Shocks F1 World: Ryo Hirakawa Tapped as Test and Reserve Driver for 2025

In a move that has electrified the Formula 1 paddock, Alpine has announced Ryo Hirakawa as its official test and reserve driver for the 2025 season. The Japanese motorsport sensation, who boasts an illustrious career across Super Formula, Super GT, and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), is set to bring his racing acumen to the pinnacle of motorsport.

A Champion’s Resume

Hirakawa, a two-time FIA WEC champion (2022, 2023) and a Le Mans winner with Toyota in 2022, is no stranger to high-pressure, world-class racing. The 29-year-old has already dipped his toes into Formula 1 waters, having previously tested with McLaren and Haas. Now, he steps into a more significant role at Alpine, further solidifying his position as one of Japan’s premier racing talents.

Home Heroics Await

In a thrilling development for his fans, Hirakawa is slated to take part in Free Practice 1 (FP1) at the Japanese Grand Prix. The Suzuka Circuit will serve as a fitting stage for the Japanese driver to showcase his skills in front of a home crowd. He’ll also contribute to Alpine’s Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programme, using his extensive experience to support the team’s development efforts.

“It is an honour to be joining BWT Alpine Formula One Team as a Test and Reserve Driver for the 2025 season,” Hirakawa said. “Driving an F1 car is the pinnacle for any race driver, and I’m thrilled to participate in FP1 at my home Grand Prix. I look forward to working with Alpine and contributing to a successful season.”

Filling the Void Left by Doohan

Hirakawa’s signing comes as Alpine restructures its driver lineup following Jack Doohan’s promotion to a full-time race seat. Alongside Paul Aron, Hirakawa will be part of Alpine’s reserve squad, providing critical support for the team’s race and development programs throughout the 2025 season.

Team Principal Oliver Oakes expressed his enthusiasm for Hirakawa’s arrival:
“Ryo brings a wealth of racing experience and success to our team. His FP1 outing in Japan will undoubtedly be a special moment for him and our fans. His role in our TPC programme and simulator work will be crucial as we aim to make 2025 a standout year for Alpine.”

A Diverse Talent Pool for Alpine

Hirakawa’s addition strengthens Alpine’s growing roster of drivers and reflects the team’s commitment to leveraging diverse talents. With his proven track record and ability to adapt to various racing disciplines, Hirakawa is poised to play a pivotal role in Alpine’s quest for F1 success.

As the 2025 season looms, all eyes will be on Suzuka, where Hirakawa’s FP1 debut promises to be a headline moment for both the driver and Alpine.
