Mazda has announced that it will proceed with the construction of a new battery module factory, which will be located in the city of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi, Japan.
In a statement, Mazda added that the new factory “will produce cylindrical lithium-ion battery modules and packs for vehicles, supplied by Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. (Panasonic Energy)”.
The battery packs produced at the new factory will be used to power Mazda’s first battery electric vehicle, based on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, which will be manufactured at Mazda’s facilities in Japan.
The Japanese manufacturer also revealed that the annual production capacity of the new battery factory is expected to reach 10 GWh.
The construction of Mazda’s new cylindrical battery factory is another step for the Japanese brand in its 2030 Management Policy, a multi-solution strategy aimed at providing a variety of technological options to meet customer needs and regulatory changes, in order to help reduce emissions while also contributing to the fight against global warming.
