Tony Stewart Racing’s Bold Move: Can Todd Devnich Revive Donny Schatz’s Glory Days?

Ten-time champion Donny Schatz gets comfortable before qualifying during the first night of the World of Outlaws Beaver Dam Bash on Friday, June 5,2020, at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Outlaws2

Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) has always been a powerhouse in motorsport, but the team’s recent struggles in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series have sparked a major shake-up. Enter Todd Devnich, a seasoned racing veteran with decades of experience spanning sprint cars and NASCAR. Now promoted to crew chief, Devnich faces the enormous challenge of guiding 10-time World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz back to his championship-winning form.

The Schatz Decline: From Dominance to Drought

Donny Schatz is a name synonymous with excellence in sprint car racing. A 10-time champion with a trophy cabinet bursting at the seams, Schatz once ruled the World of Outlaws like no other. Between 2006 and 2018, Schatz captured nine titles, cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s greatest. However, since his last championship in 2018, Schatz has seen his dominance wane. His best result over the last six seasons was a third-place finish in the 2024 standings.

The decline hasn’t been for lack of effort. Schatz has battled fiercely, but the competition has grown stronger, and the consistency that once defined his career has been elusive. With Schatz entering the twilight of his career at 47, TSR’s decision to elevate Devnich is a calculated gamble to reignite the spark that once made the No. 15 team unbeatable.

The Devnich Factor: A Crew Chief With Proven Pedigree

Todd Devnich is no stranger to the high-stakes world of racing. Hailing from Lincoln, Nebraska, Devnich cut his teeth in sprint cars before making a name for himself in NASCAR. With stints at Evernham Motorsports and Hendrick Motorsports, where he worked alongside luminaries like Craig Cormack and Rick Warner, Devnich honed his craft as a car chief. His time at Hendrick, a team renowned for its attention to detail and relentless pursuit of perfection, gave him invaluable experience that he now brings back to TSR.

Despite his impressive résumé, this is Devnich’s first shot as a crew chief. It’s a high-pressure role, but one he’s embracing with enthusiasm. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of stepping into the role of crew chief, especially getting to do so with a driver of Donny Schatz’s caliber and with a team like Tony Stewart Racing,” Devnich said.

A Critical Year for TSR

2025 marks TSR’s 25th anniversary, and the team is determined to make it a season to remember. The addition of Devnich as crew chief signals a renewed commitment to excellence. His deep understanding of the sport, combined with Schatz’s legendary experience behind the wheel, creates a partnership that could propel the team back to the top.

TSR’s decision to make this change isn’t just about Schatz—it’s about the team’s legacy. TSR has consistently raised the bar in motorsport, excelling in everything from sprint cars to drag racing. But in the fiercely competitive world of the World of Outlaws, maintaining that standard requires constant evolution.

Can Schatz Deliver Under Pressure?

For Schatz, 2025 is a make-or-break year. With Devnich calling the shots, the pressure is on to not just compete but to contend for the championship. A strong performance would not only silence critics but also cement Schatz’s place among the all-time greats in sprint car racing.

A Turning Point?

The question remains: Can Devnich’s fresh perspective and technical expertise unlock the potential that’s been dormant in the No. 15 car? TSR’s faith in him suggests they believe the answer is yes. As the team gears up for the season, all eyes will be on Schatz and Devnich to see if they can deliver the results TSR needs to reclaim its place atop the World of Outlaws.

With the stakes higher than ever, one thing is certain: the 2025 World of Outlaws season is shaping up to be a pivotal chapter in the storied history of Tony Stewart Racing.
