Four-time Dakar Rally champion Carlos Sainz retires from the 2025 event after safety concerns force M-Sport Ford to withdraw his damaged vehicle.
Carlos Sainz’s bid for a fifth Dakar Rally title came to an abrupt end after the Spaniard’s Ford Raptor sustained irreparable damage during a dramatic rollover on the first day of the 48-hour chrono stage in Bisha. Despite his efforts to push through the second leg of the stage on Monday, Sainz’s hopes were dashed when his team confirmed the damage to the vehicle’s safety cage had rendered it unfit to continue.
A valiant effort cut short
The incident occurred on Sunday, during the opening part of the grueling 48-hour test. Sainz and co-driver Lucas Cruz managed to reach the overnight halt and even completed the second half of the stage the following day. However, upon returning to the bivouac, it became clear that the damage was beyond repair under FIA safety regulations.
In a statement, M-Sport Ford announced the decision:
“Due to damage to the safety cage of vehicle #225 (Carlos Sainz, Lucas Cruz) sustained during the accident in the first part of the 48 Chrono of the 2025 Dakar Rally and in line with FIA regulations, it has been decided to retire the vehicle.”
A tough blow for Sainz and M-Sport Ford
Sainz, a Dakar legend with four wins to his name, entered the 2025 rally with high expectations. Known for his relentless determination and skill, the 61-year-old was considered a top contender. The withdrawal not only ends his quest for a fifth title but also marks a significant setback for the M-Sport Ford team.
Ekström keeps Ford in the hunt
While Sainz’s exit is a blow, M-Sport Ford remains in contention thanks to teammate Mattias Ekström. The Swedish driver is currently fifth overall, just 13 minutes behind leader Henk Lategan, keeping Ford’s hopes alive in the prestigious rally.
A rally of challenges and resilience
The Dakar Rally, known for its brutal terrain and relentless challenges, has once again proven why it’s one of motorsport’s toughest events. Sainz’s withdrawal is a stark reminder of the fine margins between triumph and heartbreak in this grueling competition.
As the rally progresses, all eyes will now turn to Ekström as he carries the mantle for M-Sport Ford, aiming to secure a strong finish in honor of his sidelined teammate.
