Carlos Sainz: The Star Who Keeps Getting Overlooked by F1’s Biggest Teams

Carlos Sainz Reflects Proudly on Final Ferrari Season Despite “Strange” Year and Impending Departure

Carlos Sainz, one of the most talented and seasoned drivers on the Formula 1 grid, has faced yet another snub from the sport’s elite teams. Despite a strong track record, including a victory at the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, the 30-year-old Spaniard found himself bypassed for marquee opportunities at Red Bull and Mercedes before ultimately signing with Williams.

The Red Bull Conundrum: Why Sainz Missed Out Again

Speculation had been rife about Sainz potentially partnering with reigning champion Max Verstappen at Red Bull, but the team opted to promote from within, choosing Liam Lawson over the experienced Spaniard. Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, admitted Sainz was seriously considered but ultimately stuck to the team’s philosophy of nurturing talent from its junior program.

“Carlos is a great driver, and options still remain open with him in the future,” Horner told reporters, hinting at the respect Red Bull holds for Sainz’s abilities. However, he emphasized the importance of sending the right message to their young drivers.

“By promoting from within, we reinforce that delivering in our junior program provides a clear pathway to Formula 1,” Horner explained. “If we’d gone outside the program, it would’ve sent the wrong signal, especially given the intense competition for young drivers starting as early as 13 or 14.”

A Familiar Story: Passed Over at Red Bull in 2016

This isn’t the first time Sainz has faced disappointment at Red Bull. Back in 2016, when the team needed a replacement for Daniil Kvyat, Sainz was a logical choice given his solid performances at Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri). Instead, the team elevated Max Verstappen, a decision that has since paid off handsomely.

“Carlos was considered back then too,” Horner revealed. “There was a lot of logic in promoting him, but we chose to invest in Max, believing in his raw talent and long-term potential.”

Overlooked by Mercedes in Hamilton’s Exit

Adding to the heartbreak, Sainz was also passed over by Mercedes to replace Lewis Hamilton, who departed the Silver Arrows for Ferrari. Mercedes instead decided to stick with their existing lineup, further fueling speculation about Sainz’s inability to secure a seat at one of F1’s dominant teams.

A New Chapter with Williams

Despite the setbacks, Sainz has embraced his move to Williams as an opportunity to lead a historic team back to prominence. The partnership reflects his determination to thrive, even in less-than-ideal circumstances.

Sainz’s career trajectory showcases his resilience and unwavering commitment to proving his worth on the grid. While Red Bull and Mercedes may have chosen other paths, the Spaniard’s story is far from over. Could Williams become the stage where Sainz silences his doubters once and for all?
