Jacky Ickx Calls for Fernando Alonso’s Third F1 Title: “He Deserves It”

In the world of Formula 1, few drivers have showcased the grit, longevity, and skill of Fernando Alonso. However, despite his undeniable brilliance, the Spaniard remains stuck on two world titles, won back-to-back in 2005 and 2006. Now, motorsport legend Jacky Ickx has expressed his fervent wish to see Alonso claim a long-overdue third championship.

“The Years That Have Passed Do Not Return”

Ickx, a former Le Mans winner and revered figure in motorsport, reflected on the fleeting nature of opportunities in F1. Speaking about Alonso’s incredible career, he lamented the time that has passed since the Spaniard last held the championship trophy aloft.

“The years that have passed do not come back, and he was champion in 2005 and 2006. I hope the Spaniard can win his third world championship.”

Alonso, who broke Ferrari’s dominance in the mid-2000s, remains one of the most respected figures on the grid, with his relentless pursuit of perfection and unparalleled racing acumen.

A Rollercoaster 2023 and Aston Martin’s Struggles

Ickx also pointed to Alonso’s resurgence in early 2023 with Aston Martin. The team started strong, with the 43-year-old regularly climbing onto the podium and reigniting fans’ hopes of another title push. However, as the season wore on, Aston Martin’s performance waned, leaving Alonso battling for points rather than victories.

“Last year with Aston Martin he was doing very well, and we all thought he could be there. The world of F1 is very difficult.”

Despite the setback, Alonso’s determination never wavered—a hallmark of his illustrious career.

“Longevity Is His Superpower”

At 43 years old, Alonso holds the record for the most Grand Prix starts in F1 history, with 404 races under his belt. Jacky Ickx sees this longevity not just as a statistic but as a testament to Alonso’s resilience and talent.

“His longevity alone is proof that he is very special. Also, for his human and driving quality. He is a whole. I like him.”

Alonso has made it clear that he’s not done yet. With a planned title bid in 2026, when the new regulations come into effect, the Spaniard has his sights firmly set on the ultimate prize.

The Road Ahead for Alonso

For Alonso to reclaim championship glory, Aston Martin will need to address its current performance deficit. With major rule changes on the horizon in 2026, the team is likely to shift its focus toward gaining an edge in the next era of F1. Until then, the 2025 season might serve as a transitional year for both Alonso and Aston Martin.

But one thing is clear: Alonso’s drive, talent, and relentless passion for the sport have made him one of the most enduring and beloved figures in motorsport history. If anyone can defy the odds and secure a third world championship, it’s Fernando Alonso.
