Charles Leclerc Ready to Match Verstappen’s Aggression When It Counts

LUSAIL CITY, QATAR - DECEMBER 01: Race winner Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing and Charles Leclerc of Monaco and Ferrari attend the press conference after the F1 Grand Prix of Qatar at Lusail International Circuit on December 01, 2024 in Lusail City, Qatar. Charles Leclerc has declared that when the stakes are high, he’s ready to channel his aggressive side to rival Formula 1’s most daring driver, Max Verstappen. Reflecting on the 2024 season and his own battles with the reigning champion, the Ferrari ace emphasized his ability to rise to the challenge when risks are necessary.

Verstappen’s Aggression: A Benchmark

Max Verstappen’s assertive driving style has been a hallmark of his dominance, helping him secure a fourth consecutive World Championship in 2024. His battles with Lando Norris last season, though often controversial, highlighted his ability to push boundaries and exploit opportunities.

For Leclerc, this style is both a challenge and an inspiration:

“Max knows how to adapt to different situations,” Leclerc told RacingNews365. “When the end of the season arrived, and Lando was coming back, you could see him play with the rules a lot more. I feel like I’ve got that in me.”

A Rivalry with Roots

Leclerc and Verstappen’s history stretches back to their karting days, where their raw talent often put them head-to-head. Despite Verstappen’s dominance, Leclerc has delivered standout moments, such as his iconic victory at Monza in 2019 and his aggressive defense at Silverstone in 2022. Their rivalry was reignited in 2022 when Leclerc emerged as Verstappen’s primary title challenger.

While Verstappen’s 2024 dominance limited direct confrontations with Ferrari, Leclerc noted that when opportunities arise, he’s ready to take a page out of Verstappen’s book:

“Whenever big things are at stake, when it’s the moment to take those risks with the right people, I’ll go for it. That’s why I’ve always enjoyed racing with Max—the mentality of the driver is a big part.”

Ferrari’s 2024 Setbacks

Leclerc’s 2024 season included three standout victories—Monaco, Italy, and the United States—but Ferrari’s slow start to the season hindered his ability to mount a sustained title challenge. By the time Ferrari became competitive, the battle for the championship had shifted to Verstappen and Norris, leaving Leclerc playing catch-up.

“At the beginning of the season, [Max] had quite a dominant car, and we were not in the fight,” Leclerc explained. “By the time we were competitive, there was Lando in-between, so he never really saw us as a direct competitor.”

Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond

With Ferrari showing improved pace in the latter half of 2024, Leclerc is optimistic about mounting a stronger challenge in 2025. He is eager to reignite his battles with Verstappen and prove he has the aggression, consistency, and talent to go toe-to-toe with the Dutchman.

“I’ve always known how talented Max is since we were young,” Leclerc said. “He is reliable, consistent, and extremely fast. But I’m ready to match that when it matters most.”

A Clash of Titans?

As Ferrari looks to start 2025 on stronger footing, fans are hopeful that Leclerc will be able to challenge Verstappen and Norris for the championship. With Leclerc vowing to “go for it” when the moment demands, the grid could see one of its most competitive seasons yet.
