Jos vs. Horner: Has Red Bull Really Buried the Hatchet?

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - NOVEMBER 01: Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner talks to Jos Verstappen in the Paddock during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Brazil at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace on November 01, 2024 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After a tumultuous year of internal strife, Red Bull Racing appears to be entering 2025 with newfound harmony—at least on the surface. The relationship between Christian Horner, the team principal, and Jos Verstappen, father of reigning four-time world champion Max Verstappen, has seemingly taken a turn for the better, if images from the Red Bull Content Pool are to be believed.

Signs of Peace—or a PR Masterclass?
Photographs from the Brazilian Grand Prix and the Abu Dhabi finale depict Jos and Horner deep in conversation, laughing alongside Max and appearing at ease in each other’s company. These snapshots suggest a detente in the once-explosive relationship between the two figures. But given their rocky history, is this genuine camaraderie, or a PR masterstroke orchestrated to project unity?

A Year of Explosive Drama
The Red Bull empire faced unprecedented turbulence in 2024, starting with allegations of power consolidation by Horner at the expense of senior advisor Helmut Marko. Jos Verstappen, never one to hold back, became a vocal critic of Horner’s leadership, accusing him of destabilizing the team.

“The team is in danger of being torn apart. It can’t go on the way it is,” Jos declared during the Bahrain Grand Prix, even suggesting that Horner step aside to restore balance within Red Bull’s hierarchy.

The tension peaked with whispers of a “sexting saga” involving Horner, followed by the shocking departure of technical mastermind Adrian Newey and other senior staff. Jos, fiercely protective of his son, placed much of the blame for the team’s struggles at Horner’s feet.

A Family Business—Verstappen Style
Jos has always maintained an active role in shaping Max’s career, and his critique of Horner came from a place of ensuring stability for his son. When asked recently if he regretted his comments, Jos doubled down:

“No, not at all. I will never harm Max. I look at the overall picture. In the end, I stand by everything I said.”

These remarks reinforce the notion that Jos sees himself not just as a father but as a stakeholder in Max’s—and by extension, Red Bull’s—success.

Can Peace Translate to Performance?
Red Bull’s focus now shifts to the upcoming 2025 season and ensuring their car, the RB21, meets Max Verstappen’s high expectations. History has shown that when the team delivers a car that suits Max, he delivers extraordinary results, often outpacing his teammates in the same machinery. But if the car falters, the “peace” between Jos and Horner may prove fragile.

With pre-season testing in Bahrain just weeks away, the question looms: can Red Bull channel this newfound stability into on-track dominance, or will old tensions resurface at the first sign of trouble?

For now, the world watches as Jos Verstappen and Christian Horner play nice—but the high-stakes world of Formula 1 rarely leaves room for lasting harmony.
