Lewis Hamilton Named Met Gala Co-Chair: The F1 Legend’s Nerve-Wracking Dive into the World’s Biggest Fashion Stage

Lewis Hamilton’s move to Scuderia Ferrari has ignited discussions throughout the Formula 1 community, with many labeling it a career-defining gamble. Former F1 driver Karun Chandhok believes the seven-time world champion’s switch from Mercedes to Ferrari is a calculated risk, similar to the bold decision he made in 2013 when he left McLaren for Mercedes—a move that reshaped the sport’s history.

Hamilton’s Second Big Bet

Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari marks just the second team change of his illustrious career. After 12 years with Mercedes, the 39-year-old opted for a fresh challenge with Formula 1’s most iconic team, a decision Chandhok sees as a strategic leap of faith.

“It’s a calculated risk,” Chandhok explained. “Once it worked [with Mercedes], let’s see if it repeats itself. I think it’s a bet, because how do you know what the opposing team was doing?”

Hamilton’s previous switch to Mercedes was widely questioned at the time but ultimately proved to be a masterstroke, resulting in six Drivers’ Championships and eight Constructors’ titles for the Brackley-based outfit during his tenure. Now, he’s betting that Ferrari can provide the platform for him to claim his elusive eighth title.

A Frustrating End at Mercedes

Chandhok highlighted Hamilton’s growing frustrations during his final season at Mercedes. The Briton openly admitted that his input on car development wasn’t being fully embraced, contributing to his decision to explore new opportunities.

“Of course, he had an idea of what was going on at Mercedes. He said people didn’t necessarily listen to what he said and didn’t fully take into account some of his ideas on car development,” Chandhok recalled.

This disconnect, combined with Mercedes’ inability to deliver a competitive car in the current ground-effect era, likely fueled Hamilton’s desire for a change of environment.

What Ferrari Offers Hamilton

Ferrari, despite its storied history, has struggled to secure consistent championship contention in recent years. However, the team showed flashes of competitiveness in 2024, and Hamilton’s arrival signals a renewed focus on reclaiming its place at the top of the sport. Chandhok believes this move could rejuvenate the seven-time champion.

“Certainly, Lewis Hamilton would not be willing to suffer through such a situation at Ferrari this year. He is rejuvenated and would be happy to provide his suggestions. Perhaps, this change of environment can help him prosper in the upcoming season.”

A High-Stakes Season Ahead

Hamilton’s tenure at Ferrari won’t be without challenges. As he joins forces with Charles Leclerc, one of the grid’s brightest talents, managing internal dynamics will be critical. The Scuderia’s ability to execute under pressure will also be under scrutiny, particularly as Hamilton seeks to replicate the unprecedented success he achieved with Mercedes.

The Legacy Gamble

Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari isn’t just about chasing an eighth title—it’s about cementing his legacy by succeeding with the sport’s most legendary team. Whether this gamble pays off remains to be seen, but as Chandhok aptly pointed out, “It’s a bet worth taking.”
