Jos Verstappen Clashes with Christian Horner Over Simulator Praise Amid Red Bull Struggles

Max Verstappen has come to the defense of his father, Jos Verstappen, whose outspoken criticism of Red Bull’s performance during the turbulent 2024 Formula 1 season drew significant backlash. The elder Verstappen’s comments, which included claims that the team was “on the verge of falling apart,” stirred controversy and reportedly caused tension within the Milton Keynes-based team.

However, Max Verstappen, fresh off securing his fourth F1 World Championship, dismissed the criticism directed at his father as “nonsense.”

“My father sees the bigger picture very quickly,” said Verstappen. “Certain things that happen have an influence on the future of me and the team. Some people from outside may not see that.”

Jos Verstappen’s Critique of Red Bull

Throughout the 2024 season, Jos Verstappen frequently voiced concerns about Red Bull’s balance issues and internal dynamics, at times engaging in heated exchanges with team principal Christian Horner. Critics accused him of adding unnecessary pressure during a challenging season, but Max Verstappen suggested his father’s input was misunderstood.

Red Bull’s 2024 Challenges

Red Bull endured a rollercoaster season in 2024, plagued by balance issues and an inconsistent car that required Verstappen to drive at the absolute limit to maintain his championship momentum. Despite the setbacks, Verstappen clinched his fourth title, though Red Bull fell short in the Constructors’ Championship, finishing third behind McLaren and Ferrari.

Reflecting on the season, Verstappen expressed confidence that the team would address the car’s balance problems during the winter break.

“I trust that the team can fix the balance problems of last season. If we are still beaten, it will be on the basis of pure speed.”

Looking Ahead to 2025

The 27-year-old acknowledged the need for Red Bull to start strong in 2025, emphasizing that a solid foundation early in the season is critical to reclaiming both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

Red Bull’s focus on fine-tuning their car comes amid heightened competition from a resurgent McLaren and Ferrari, both of whom delivered standout performances in 2024. With the final year of the current regulations on the horizon, Verstappen and Red Bull must balance addressing immediate performance issues with preparing for the sweeping rule changes set for 2026.

A Team Effort Moving Forward

While Verstappen defended his father’s candid approach, he reiterated his faith in the Red Bull squad’s ability to deliver a competitive car. The reigning champion remains motivated to add a fifth title to his name but knows the road ahead will not be easy.

“The team will work day and night to solve the issues. If we perform as we should, everything else will take care of itself.”

With the start of the 2025 season just weeks away, all eyes will be on Red Bull as they aim to reclaim their dominance and help Verstappen maintain his position at the pinnacle of Formula 1.
