Kyle Larson Gears Up for Busch Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium: “I Hope It’s as Crazy as I Remember”

Hendrick Motorsports driver and 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kyle Larson has shared his excitement and expectations for the upcoming Busch Clash at the iconic Bowman Gray Stadium, a track infamous for its high-octane action, chaotic crashes, and fiercely passionate fanbase.

For the first time in 53 years, NASCAR’s top series will return to Bowman Gray, often referred to as the “Madhouse.” The short-track spectacle promises to bring an electrifying atmosphere, and Larson, who has firsthand experience with the stadium’s unique energy, is ready to take on the challenge.

“Everything I Hoped It Would Be”

In a recent interview, Larson reflected on his previous visits to the historic venue, particularly when he watched Modified car races as a fan.

“I don’t remember much about the race,” Larson admitted, “but I remember I went into the stands to watch the Modifieds afterwards, and that was my first time just being a fan there. It was everything I was hoping it would be.”

Having also watched the Madhouse documentary—a series that captured the wild and unpredictable spirit of Bowman Gray’s racing culture—Larson is eager to see if the same rowdy energy will be present when NASCAR returns.

“The crowd was rowdy,” Larson recalled. “We went back once or twice since then, but the crowd was really crazy that night. I hope it’s like that.”

Hendrick Teammates Echo the Sentiment

Larson isn’t the only Hendrick Motorsports driver who has fond (and wild) memories of Bowman Gray. His teammate Alex Bowman shared his own unique experience as a fan at the track, recalling a bizarre moment involving a pace car.

“I went to a race there one day, the year we ran K&N. I just wanted to go see it the weekend before,” Bowman said. “I had never seen a pace car driver get flipped off until Bowman Gray. It was pretty cool.”

Bowman’s recollection captures the unfiltered passion of Bowman Gray’s fanbase, renowned for their vocal and unapologetic support of their favorite drivers—and disdain for others.

The Return of the “Madhouse”

The Busch Clash at Bowman Gray will pit NASCAR’s best against the track’s notoriously tight turns and unforgiving walls, testing drivers’ skills and patience. With Next-Gen cars on a circuit famous for close-quarters combat, fans can expect a spectacle that delivers drama, action, and maybe even a few surprises.

Both Larson and Bowman are counting on the same electrifying atmosphere they experienced as fans, but now from behind the wheel. The NASCAR community eagerly awaits the return of the “Madhouse” to see if the short track can live up to its legendary reputation in the modern era.
