After a challenging 2024 Formula 1 season and his subsequent exit from Sauber, Zhou Guanyu isn’t ready to fade into the motorsport background. The Chinese driver is already strategizing a return to the grid in 2026, with his eyes firmly set on the new Cadillac F1 project. With Cadillac entering the sport alongside General Motors and Ferrari, Zhou sees a promising opportunity to reignite his F1 career.

A Difficult 2024 Season

Zhou’s 2024 campaign was marred by an uncompetitive Sauber car, with his standout performance—a P8 finish at the Qatar Grand Prix—coming too late to secure his future with the team. Sauber had already confirmed Formula 2 champion Gabriel Bortoleto as Zhou’s replacement for 2025, leaving Zhou sidelined and contemplating his next move.

Interest in Cadillac F1

During the Qatar GP press conference, Zhou made it clear that he views Cadillac’s entry as a golden opportunity to rejoin the F1 ranks.

“I’m fully aware that GM and Cadillac are joining the grid,” Zhou said. “It’s great for the sport because people often talk about the lack of seats for young drivers. For me, this presents a chance to plan for the future and hopefully secure an opportunity with them.”

Cadillac’s F1 project, spearheaded by former Marussia Sporting Director Graeme Lowdon as team principal, provides an intriguing prospect for Zhou. Lowdon’s familiarity with Zhou, combined with Cadillac’s partnership with Ferrari for customer engines, adds to the potential alignment of Zhou’s ambitions with the new team’s needs.

Connections and Strategy

Zhou’s connections to Ferrari could also play a crucial role. Rumors suggest he might take on a reserve driver role with the Scuderia in 2025, a position that would keep him involved in F1 operations and development, further boosting his prospects for 2026.

“My priority is to have another chance to come back on the grid,” Zhou stated. “I don’t really care where I go, but if there’s a chance, I’ll absolutely take it. Let’s see what the future holds.”

Choosing Preparation Over Alternative Racing

Unlike many drivers who seek competition in other series while waiting for an F1 opportunity, Zhou has opted to stay focused on a potential F1 return.

“I decided not to race in another series,” he explained. “With so many doors potentially opening, I want to ensure I’m fully prepared if a seat becomes available, even for just one race.”

This decision underscores Zhou’s commitment to remaining sharp and available, positioning himself as a reliable option for teams seeking a mid-season substitute or a long-term addition.

Cadillac: The Next Chapter?

Cadillac’s upcoming entry into F1 is generating significant buzz, with the team set to debut in 2026 alongside Ferrari-powered engines. Zhou’s potential alignment with Cadillac represents a compelling narrative of resilience and redemption. As Lowdon builds the team from the ground up, Zhou’s experience and adaptability could make him an attractive choice for a driver lineup that will inevitably face immense scrutiny.
