The 2024 Formula 1 season marked a turning point for several drivers, none more so than Valtteri Bottas, whose stint with Sauber (soon-to-be Audi) ended without a contract renewal. Despite a tough few years, the 10-time Grand Prix winner remains optimistic about his future in the sport and is determined to reclaim a racing seat.

Bottas: “I Could Go Forever”

At 35, Bottas has signed with Mercedes as a reserve driver for 2025, a role that keeps him connected to the F1 paddock. Despite being sidelined, Bottas insists he’s far from done with Formula 1 and has no plans to walk away from the sport.

“That’s why I also feel like I’m not done with the sport yet, because I feel like I could go forever,” Bottas said. “I’ve got everything in a great balance, and I don’t really feel like I’m getting fatigued because of F1.”

This statement reflects Bottas’ hunger to compete, even as other drivers like Lewis Hamilton (39) and Fernando Alonso (43) extend their careers well into their late 30s and 40s.

A Regretful Stint at Sauber

Bottas openly admitted that joining Sauber in 2022 was a decision he would reconsider if given the chance. While initially promising, instability within the Hinwil-based team derailed his time there.

“If I could go back three years, I probably would have chosen another team to go into, based on what the situation is now. But you just can’t predict the future.”

He highlighted the lack of continuity in Sauber’s leadership as a critical issue, with the team undergoing three leadership changes in as many years. This inconsistency disrupted the team’s progress and left Bottas without the tools to succeed.

Bottas’ Legacy and Future Prospects

Known for his one-lap qualifying prowess and calm under pressure, Bottas remains a respected figure in the paddock. His return to Mercedes—where he played a key role in securing multiple Constructors’ Championships—underscores his enduring value to top teams.

With George Russell and Charles Leclerc as Mercedes’ lead drivers, Bottas is unlikely to race in 2025 unless unforeseen circumstances arise. However, his role as a reserve ensures he remains race-ready and connected to the sport.

A Possible Comeback?

Bottas’ hopes of returning to a full-time seat hinge on the availability of opportunities in 2026 when Audi’s F1 project officially begins. The Finn’s extensive experience and proven track record make him a viable candidate for teams seeking a seasoned driver during the transitional phase of F1’s regulation changes.

“I’m not fatigued, and I believe I still have the pace. If an opportunity comes, I’ll be ready to take it.”

What’s Next for Bottas?

While Bottas navigates the uncertainties of his career, he remains a key asset to Mercedes and a valuable reserve for any team needing a skilled and experienced driver. His determination to return to the grid reflects the resilience that has defined his career.

The 2025 season will be a test of patience and preparation for Bottas, but with his sights firmly set on a comeback, the Finn isn’t writing his F1 story’s final chapter just yet.
