Motorsport writer Matt Bishop recalls a previous discussion with Lewis Hamilton about his intention to join Ferrari nearly a decade ago.

Lewis Hamilton’s recent lack of victories has sparked speculation about his future in Formula 1. Despite his record-breaking career, the British driver has not won a Grand Prix since his 104th victory in 2021. However, there may be a positive turn of events for Hamilton as he has just signed a multi-year contract with Ferrari for the 2025 season and beyond.

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari comes as a surprise, as he has been a loyal member of the Mercedes team for 11 years. Rumors of his departure had circulated in the F1 community, but they were largely dismissed. Now that the deal is official, F1 columnist Matt Bishop reflects on his conversation with Hamilton in Japan, where the driver expressed his aspirations to drive for Ferrari.

Ferrari, the oldest and most successful team in F1 history, has always been a dream destination for many drivers. Despite Hamilton’s seven World Championships with Mercedes, he has long expressed his interest in joining Ferrari. Now that the opportunity has arisen, there are several talented drivers vying for the vacant seat at Mercedes.

Daniel Ricciardo, although rumored to be interested, is unable to join Mercedes due to his contractual obligations with Red Bull. However, Alex Albon has reportedly made a bid to catch Mercedes’ attention. Another contender is Kimi Antonelli, a rising star currently competing in Formula 2. Antonelli’s impressive track record, including multiple karting championships and titles in German and Spanish F4, has caught the attention of Mercedes. The team believes he is ready to make his debut with the Silver Arrows.

As existing contracts in Formula 1 come to an end, the driver situation is expected to become more complex. It remains to be seen if more significant changes will occur in the F1 world, similar to Hamilton’s move to Ferrari.
