Carlos Sainz Breaks Silence: The Ferrari Bombshell That Made Him Stronger

In a move that stunned the Formula 1 world, Ferrari’s decision to part ways with Carlos Sainz in favor of signing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton sent shockwaves through the Spaniard’s career—and his confidence. Speaking candidly on the Beyond the Grid podcast, Sainz revealed how the unexpected announcement in February shattered his expectations but ultimately shaped him into a more resilient and determined driver.

“A Massive Shock to My Hopes”
For Sainz, the news came out of nowhere. Heading into the 2024 season, he was “99% sure” that his future with Ferrari was secure, especially after a strong showing in 2023 where he became the only non-Red Bull driver to win a Grand Prix, triumphing in Singapore.

“I was not prepared for that kind of news,” Sainz admitted. “It was a massive shock to my hopes. I didn’t enjoy that moment at all.”

Despite the emotional blow, Sainz doubled down on his preparation, training harder than ever to compete in what would become his final season with the Scuderia. Determined to leave on a high note, he approached the year with a fierce drive to prove himself on the track.

Winning Through Adversity
Sainz’s perseverance paid off early in the season with a victory at the Australian Grand Prix, a moment that became a turning point in his difficult journey. Reflecting on the win, Sainz described it as one of the most emotional moments of his career.

“I remember being very emotional on that podium,” he said. “My dad was there, my manager, my girlfriend, and I was thinking about my mum. They had all seen me suffer during the winter. When I say suffer, I don’t mean I was crying behind closed doors, but I was hurt.”

The win wasn’t just a statement of skill—it was a testament to the strength of the support system around him. “I realized how lucky I am to have the people I have around me, giving me the inner strength to overcome what was a tough moment.”

From Pain to Pride
While leaving Ferrari was a bitter pill to swallow, Sainz has found a silver lining in the experience. As he prepares to join Williams for the 2025 season, he reflects on how the adversity pushed him to grow both as a driver and an athlete.

“When I look back now, I’m almost happy it happened. It made me a much better driver and a much better athlete in general. It’s one of those moments you don’t want to go through, but when you do, you come out stronger.”

A New Chapter with Williams
Sainz’s move to Williams signals a fresh start and an opportunity to bring his hard-earned resilience to a team looking to rebuild its legacy. While Ferrari chose to place its bets on Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Sainz’s departure underscores how unpredictable and cutthroat Formula 1 can be—even for proven talent.

As he looks to the future, Sainz is embracing the challenge of leading Williams back to competitiveness, channeling the lessons learned from a year of emotional highs and lows into his next chapter on the grid.
