Luca di Montezemolo Defends Hamilton’s Ferrari Move: ‘This Is Not Just a Marketing Stunt’

The motorsport world is abuzz with the seismic announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s 2025 move to Ferrari, marking one of the most high-profile transfers in Formula 1 history. However, as rumors swirl about marketing motives behind the decision, former Ferrari President Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has firmly dismissed such claims, insisting Hamilton’s arrival is rooted in performance, ambition, and a shared dream of glory.

Hamilton’s Move: More Than a PR Coup
Montezemolo, a pivotal figure in Ferrari’s storied history, emphasized that Hamilton’s move to Maranello is not a mere marketing ploy. Instead, he described the seven-time world champion as a driver of extraordinary caliber, likening him to Max Verstappen in terms of sheer dominance and impact on the sport.

“Hamilton is a phenomenon like Verstappen. His arrival at Ferrari is not a marketing operation, because he strongly wanted to end his career by winning in a red dress,” Montezemolo stated.

The Briton’s switch to Ferrari is reportedly accompanied by lucrative sponsorship deals transitioning from Mercedes, further fueling speculation about the financial motivations behind the move. Yet Montezemolo insists that Hamilton’s hunger for an eighth world title and his desire to close out his legendary career at Ferrari were the true driving forces.

Ferrari’s Decision Sparks Debate
Ferrari’s decision to replace Carlos Sainz with Hamilton has drawn both excitement and criticism. Many within the F1 community argue that the Scuderia’s 2024 resurgence—where they fought McLaren and Red Bull fiercely for the Constructors’ Championship—highlighted the strength of their current driver lineup, with Sainz and Charles Leclerc delivering stellar performances.

Montezemolo echoed this sentiment, subtly suggesting that Ferrari’s issues in recent seasons stemmed from factors beyond its drivers.

“Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc are strong. I don’t think the Ferrari problems of these seasons were related to the drivers,” he remarked.

This has led to speculation that Hamilton’s arrival could disrupt the harmony of the team, though others believe his vast experience and star power will only elevate Ferrari’s ambitions.

A Last Dance in Red for Hamilton
For Hamilton, Ferrari represents more than a team—it’s a legacy. Joining the Prancing Horse has long been viewed as the ultimate honor for any F1 driver, and for Hamilton, it’s an opportunity to chase an elusive eighth world championship with one of the most iconic teams in motorsport history.

Despite facing two challenging seasons at Mercedes, Hamilton remains as motivated as ever to reclaim his place at the top of the F1 hierarchy. Ferrari’s recent resurgence, coupled with their aggressive development strategy, could provide the platform he needs to mount another title challenge.

What Lies Ahead
Hamilton’s move signals a bold new era for Ferrari, one laden with both immense potential and high stakes. While questions linger about how the Briton will gel with Leclerc and adapt to Ferrari’s evolving culture, Montezemolo’s endorsement highlights the significance of this partnership.

“He strongly wanted to end his career by winning in red,” Montezemolo reiterated—a testament to Hamilton’s determination to leave an indelible mark on Ferrari’s history.

With the 2025 season looming, all eyes are on Hamilton and Ferrari as they aim to combine their storied legacies for one final, triumphant chapter.
