Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen Reunite: Former Rivals Set to Share Corvette at Daytona 24

Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen—once portrayed as bitter Supercars rivals—are reuniting for a history-making stint in a Corvette at the 2024 Rolex 24 at Daytona. But as McLaughlin sets the record straight, the Kiwi duo is ready to rewrite the narrative.

From Rivals to Teammates: A New Chapter

In a move that has racing fans buzzing, Scott McLaughlin—Team Penske’s IndyCar ace—and Shane van Gisbergen, NASCAR’s rising star and Supercars legend, will join forces in January for IMSA’s iconic Rolex 24 at Daytona. Together with American prodigy Conor Zilisch and endurance veteran Ben Keating, the Kiwi pairing will race a Trackhouse by TF Sport Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the GTD Pro class.

What makes this union so intriguing isn’t just their shared talent—it’s the storyline of two drivers whose Supercars battles Down Under were painted as one of motorsport’s fiercest rivalries.

But McLaughlin says the media got it wrong.

“The TV guys just wanted a rivalry,” he explained. “We’d bang doors, we’d spin each other out, and yeah, there were times we were pissed off, but after every race, we’d have a beer together. Our teams—Ford versus Holden—were the ones who really didn’t get along. But Shane and I? We were always good mates.”

McLaughlin’s Dream Opportunity with Chevrolet

For McLaughlin, this Daytona 24 invite marks another milestone in a career on the rise. Since moving to the United States after dominating the Australian Supercars scene, McLaughlin has flourished in IndyCar, becoming Team Penske’s top performer in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Now, the Indianapolis 500 polesitter is relishing the chance to represent Chevrolet on a global stage, driving a GT machine that brings him back to his Supercars roots.

“I make no secret of the pride I have in being part of Chevy,” McLaughlin said. “To wear the Chevy badge at Daytona is an absolute honor.”

The All-Star Lineup: Experience Meets Youth

The Trackhouse lineup is a perfect blend of experience and youthful fire. McLaughlin and van Gisbergen, both proven champions, will team up with two unique co-drivers:

  • Ben Keating: The ageless gentleman driver with an unmatched reputation in sports car racing.
  • Conor Zilisch: The teenage phenom who’s already turning heads as a class winner at the Rolex 24 and a rising NASCAR star alongside van Gisbergen.

“I’m keen to race with Ben,” McLaughlin said. “He’s awesome, a champion in his own right. And Conor—man, that kid is special. He’s so young he makes me feel old!”

The team’s age range and talent bring a dynamic element to Trackhouse’s ambitious Daytona entry.

Old Battles, New Bonds: Can They Coexist?

For fans who watched McLaughlin and van Gisbergen trade paint in Australia’s V8 Supercars, seeing the pair share a car is surreal. But McLaughlin insists the Daytona reunion is built on mutual respect and years of quiet camaraderie.

“He’s a little older, but I’ve known Shane since I was 15,” McLaughlin said. “When we raced against each other, it was always good banter—just two guys going at it. But now, sharing the same car for the first time? That’s really cool.”

Why Daytona Matters for McLaughlin

Although McLaughlin has previously raced at the Rolex 24 in LMP2, this return to GT machinery is deeply personal. It’s a chance to reconnect with his roots, showcase his versatility, and prove that his talents stretch far beyond IndyCar.

“Driving this car, on this stage, with this team—it’s an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” McLaughlin said.

The Final Word: A Team to Watch

The 2024 Rolex 24 at Daytona promises a spectacle, and the Trackhouse Corvette Z06 GT3.R will undoubtedly be one of its biggest talking points. With McLaughlin and van Gisbergen joining forces, all eyes will be on whether the former “rivals” can turn camaraderie into victory.

For Scott McLaughlin, everything is rising—and the Daytona 24 might just be the next peak.
