Daniela Cavallo, president of the general workers’ council at VW in Germany, revealed this Monday that negotiations with the company regarding cost-cutting must find a solution that excludes the closure of factories or mass layoffs in the country.
The head of the German workers’ union made these statements upon entering the last round of negotiations before Christmas, making it clear that an agreement must be reached that is good for both the workers and the company. “Workers do not want to approach Christmas with fear”, said Daniela Cavallo.
It should be noted that the German workers’ unions of the VW Group are threatening an unprecedented strike starting in 2025 if an agreement is not reached this year.
“If we do not achieve a result that meets our conditions, I am sure that workers will respond to the union’s calls to intensify the struggle”, Cavallo told reporters.
It should be noted that last week, more than 100,000 employees from nine VW factories in Germany participated in what was the largest strike in VW’s history, protesting against the management’s position to cut wages and production capacity in order to keep the brand competitive against Asian rivals.
