Oliver Bearman – From Imposter Syndrome to Confidence

At just 19 years old, Oliver Bearman has already begun carving out his place in Formula 1, proving he has the talent to compete at the highest level. After stepping in as a substitute driver for Ferrari and Haas in 2024, the British teenager is now gearing up for his full-time debut with Haas in 2025, eager to build on his impressive introduction to the sport.

A Dream Start: Points on Debut with Ferrari

Bearman’s journey into F1 took an unexpected turn in Jeddah, where he was called up by Ferrari to replace Carlos Sainz, sidelined due to appendicitis. With only a single practice session to prepare, Bearman stunned the paddock by finishing seventh and scoring points in his first-ever F1 race.

“In your first F1 race, you always have questions whether you’re actually good enough,” Bearman said in an interview with the Financial Times. “It’s a bit of imposter syndrome… Having done the race in Jeddah, I knew those questions were answered.”

His performance in Jeddah set the tone for what would become a remarkable series of opportunities.

A Steady Hand at Haas

Bearman’s F1 appearances didn’t end with Ferrari. The young Briton stepped in for Kevin Magnussen at Haas on two more occasions—once in Baku, where Magnussen served a one-race ban, and again in São Paulo when the Dane was sidelined by illness. Despite the challenges of switching teams and limited preparation, Bearman delivered consistently, finishing 10th in Baku to secure another valuable point.

“No reserve driver goes into a year expecting to race,” Bearman admitted. “The fact that I’ve got two of those opportunities, I can’t help but realize how lucky I am. But the important thing is that I really grasped them with both hands.”

These performances solidified his reputation as a composed and adaptable driver, earning him a full-time seat with Haas for the 2025 season.

From Imposter Syndrome to Confidence

Reflecting on his whirlwind F1 debut, Bearman opened up about the mental challenges of transitioning from Formula 2 to Formula 1. Despite initial doubts about his ability to compete at the sport’s highest level, his performances on track quickly silenced any self-doubt.

“I gave performances to be proud of and managed to stand out,” Bearman said. “Having those races under my belt gave me the confidence to believe I belong in F1.”

The Path Ahead: Haas in 2025

Bearman’s full-time move to Haas marks a significant step in his career. Joining a team known for nurturing young talent, Bearman is well-positioned to continue his development. His adaptability and maturity, demonstrated during his substitute stints, will be critical as he navigates the challenges of a full season.

While Haas remains a midfield contender, Bearman is optimistic about making an impact:

“I just want to keep going and hopefully have some more standout performances.”

A Rising Star in F1

Bearman’s story is one of seizing unexpected opportunities and making the most of them. In a sport where chances are rare, his ability to deliver under pressure has set him apart. As he steps into his full-time role at Haas, the F1 world will be watching closely to see how this young talent continues to rise.

With his proven composure, adaptability, and determination, Oliver Bearman is undoubtedly one to watch in the seasons ahead. Can he carry the momentum from his remarkable debut year into 2025 and establish himself as a future star of the sport? Time will tell—but Bearman seems ready to rise to the challenge.
