Mercedes is confident that Russell is prepared to assume the position of team leader in Formula 1.

Mercedes is confident that Russell is prepared to assume the position of team leader in Formula 1.

George Russell, a British driver for Mercedes AMG F1, has the potential to become the team leader in the absence of Lewis Hamilton after the 2024 season, according to Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff. Hamilton had previously signed a two-year contract extension with Mercedes, but he recently activated a break clause to join Ferrari. As Mercedes searches for a replacement, Wolff believes Russell is more than capable of stepping up to the senior role. Russell, who joined the Mercedes team in 2022 after three years with Williams, outperformed Hamilton and even secured a win. Despite a challenging season last year, Russell’s speed and talent make him a strong candidate for the team’s second seat.

Wolff has admitted that Mercedes has been affected by the timing and suggested that Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris would have been possibilities before they signed long-term contracts with Ferrari and McLaren respectively.

“It’s a thrilling situation at the end of 2024 with some drivers becoming available, others recently signed so these ones would have been chances,” he stated.

“If it had happened six weeks earlier, there would have been more opportunities, but we have to accept the current situation.

“However, in 2025 and beyond, the driver market is highly intriguing and we have to consider the future. Who can we team up with George? What is the best combination? And in terms of potential drivers, there are various options.

“At this point, I don’t want to commit to a specific timeline. I want to take my time.”
