The Formula 1 paddock was abuzz after Carlos Sainz’s surprising decision to join Williams starting in 2025, following the conclusion of his tenure with Ferrari. The Spaniard’s move to a struggling team has raised eyebrows, with McLaren’s Lando Norris, a close friend of Sainz, taking the opportunity to deliver some cheeky remarks about the switch.

Norris Questions Sainz’s Decision, Calls It a “Missed Opportunity”

During a media interaction, Norris expressed admiration for Sainz’s talent but didn’t shy away from questioning his move to Williams. Known for his playful personality, the Briton remarked that Sainz’s skills deserved a more competitive seat and lamented the missed opportunity for the 30-year-old to remain in a top-tier team.

“Carlos is someone I know well. He’s proven himself enough in Formula 1 that he deserves a good seat. It’s a shame when that opportunity is lost, but I’m sure his time will come back again.”

Playful Dig: “One Less Guy to Race”

Not one to miss a chance to inject humor, Norris joked about Sainz’s reduced chances of competing for wins and podiums at Williams, a team currently languishing in ninth in the Constructors’ standings.

“I’m happy he’s not in a quick car anymore! [It’s] one less guy to [race].”

Norris’ quip reflects the camaraderie and banter that has long defined his friendship with Sainz, dating back to their time as teammates at McLaren.

Leclerc’s Perspective: Sainz’s Ferrari Legacy

Charles Leclerc, Sainz’s teammate at Ferrari, struck a more serious tone in his comments. Reflecting on their partnership, Leclerc praised Sainz’s contributions to the team and credited him with pushing Ferrari to greater heights.

“Carlos is so incredibly talented. He’s helped me to improve in so many areas. If today we have done such a step forward, it’s a big thanks to Carlos.”

Leclerc’s comments underline the respect Sainz has earned on the grid, even as he moves to a less competitive team.

Sainz Faces Uphill Task at Williams

Sainz’s decision to join Williams has been met with mixed reactions, given the team’s recent struggles. Despite a ninth-place finish in the Constructors’ standings in 2024, Williams has ambitious plans for improvement, including significant investments in infrastructure and engineering talent.

Sainz’s move is seen as a gamble, but one that could allow him to take on a leadership role in the team’s rebuild. His experience and technical acumen could prove invaluable in helping Williams return to competitiveness, much like Fernando Alonso’s impact at Aston Martin.

What’s Next for Sainz?

While Sainz may no longer be competing for race wins or podiums in the short term, his move to Williams presents an opportunity to solidify his reputation as a team builder. Whether the gamble pays off remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Sainz’s determination and talent will be put to the test as he embarks on this new chapter.

For now, Sainz can take solace in the fact that his peers, even those like Norris with a penchant for teasing, respect his abilities. Only time will tell if his bold decision leads to a resurgence for Williams or if it marks a career detour for the Spanish driver.
