Formula E Donates $250,000 in Honor of Verstappen’s Dominance, Focuses on Women in Motorsport

Formula E is putting its money where its mouth is—literally—after CEO Jeff Dodds pledged to donate $250,000 to charitable causes despite Max Verstappen’s continued reign over Formula 1. Initially made as a tongue-in-cheek bet to reward anyone who could dethrone Verstappen, Dodds has turned the gesture into a serious commitment to support both spinal cord research and gender equity in motorsport.

“A Quarter-Million-Dollar Pledge”

Dodds admitted that Verstappen’s fourth consecutive title in 2024 was “never in doubt.” Instead of shelving the wager, he doubled down on its spirit, splitting the donation evenly:

  • $125,000 to Wings For Life, Red Bull’s spinal cord injury research charity.
  • $125,000 to a new fund supporting women in motorsport, advancing Formula E’s mission to create equal opportunities across the sport.

“Dodds and Verstappen Align on Motorsport’s Future”

In a video call before Formula E’s season opener in São Paulo, Dodds and Verstappen discussed the importance of their chosen causes. Verstappen, a long-time supporter of Wings For Life, expressed his gratitude:

“The charity closest to me is Wings For Life, and I’m sure they’ll be very grateful. Supporting young talent in motorsport is amazing, so I think it’s a great shout from you.”

“Advancing Gender Equity in Formula E”

Formula E’s donation is part of a broader strategy to promote gender parity in motorsport. The series has announced a partnership with More Than Equal, a non-profit organization working to break down barriers for women entering motorsport. The partnership will focus on:

  • Comprehensive Research: Investigating challenges women face in motorsport and identifying actionable solutions.
  • Driver Development: Translating insights into structured pathways for female drivers to progress to elite levels, including Formula E.
  • All-Women Testing Programs: Building on the success of last month’s historic all-women’s test in Jarama, Spain.

Dodds emphasized the importance of Formula E’s role in leading change:

“Our ultimate goal is to see women competing full-time in Formula E. This donation, along with our partnership with More Than Equal, is a significant step in understanding and addressing the barriers to entry.”

“More Than Equal’s Vision”

Dr. Fran Longstaff, head of research at More Than Equal, praised the partnership with Formula E, stating:

“Formula E’s commitment to providing opportunities for female drivers is remarkable. By leveraging our expertise, we aim to identify key factors for success and offer actionable recommendations that align with the unique demands of this fast-evolving series.”

“A Symbolic Shift in Motorsport”

While Verstappen’s dominance in Formula 1 continues to make headlines, Formula E’s actions represent a shift toward inclusivity and innovation in motorsport. By addressing gender equity and supporting impactful causes, Formula E is setting a benchmark for the broader motorsport community to follow.
