Helmut Marko refutes Toto Wolff’s desires for Max Verstappen to join Mercedes, asserts that the Dutch driver recalls allegations from 2021.

Max Verstappen is unlikely to join Mercedes due to his contractual obligations with Red Bull until 2028 and the contentious history between the two rival teams in Formula 1. Despite rumors of his potential move, Verstappen has already confirmed his unexpected switch to Ferrari for the 2025 season, even before the start of the 2024 season. As a result, Mercedes is actively searching for a new driver to fill the vacant seat left by the departure of the seven-time world champion. However, the reigning world champion has denied any possibility of joining the Brackley-based team after the departure of the British driver.

Helmut Marko, an influential figure in motorsport, expressed his desire to acquire Verstappen as part of the team’s driver lineup. However, this task is not as straightforward as it may seem, given Verstappen’s long-term contract with Red Bull and the support he receives from Milton Keynes, which provides him with the necessary resources and equipment to deliver exceptional performance throughout the season. Furthermore, Mercedes raised serious allegations regarding the outcome of the 2021 championship in Abu Dhabi, where Verstappen emerged as the victor under controversial circumstances. These accusations, along with the Silverstone crash involving the two drivers, have left a lasting impact on Verstappen, making an early transition to Mercedes highly unlikely.

Nevertheless, Verstappen, being an independent thinker, remains open to the idea of joining Mercedes, despite the formidable partnership he shares with Red Bull. The reigning world champion acknowledges that the environment at Brackley offers a distinct experience compared to his current team. He emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself and expressing one’s opinions, suggesting that the team’s identity is not the decisive factor for him. If a team genuinely desires Verstappen, they would need to make an effort to secure his services. Moreover, Verstappen hints at his ability to adapt to changes to some extent, further fueling speculation of a potential move to Mercedes.

Despite the ongoing speculation, Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull for the 2024 season remains unwavering, and he aims to deliver impressive results. However, replicating the extraordinary performance of 2023 will be a challenging task. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, they continue to make incremental changes to enhance their performance on the track.
