Wehrlein Escapes Unharmed After Scary Sao Paulo Crash, TAG Heuer Porsche Confirms

Reigning Formula E champion Pascal Wehrlein was given a clean bill of health following a terrifying crash during the Sao Paulo E-Prix. The dramatic incident unfolded after contact with Nick Cassidy’s damaged Jaguar, flipping Wehrlein’s Porsche into the wall and leaving him upside down on the track. Despite the severity of the crash, Wehrlein was able to report he was uninjured and was later taken to a local hospital for precautionary checks.

The Incident: A Chain Reaction

The crash occurred at Turn 6, where Cassidy, unable to control his damaged car following an earlier collision with Maximilian Guenther, made contact with Wehrlein. The reigning champion’s Porsche was launched into the barriers, flipped onto its roof, and slid down the track, prompting an immediate red flag.

Wehrlein’s teammate, Antonio Felix da Costa, reflected on the incident:
“It’s a reminder that our sport is dangerous,” he said. “But it’s also a testament to how far motorsport safety has come. I’m just glad Pascal is okay.”

Safety Measures Praised

Wehrlein’s quick recovery underscores the advancements in motorsport safety, particularly in Formula E’s Gen3 Evo cars. Da Costa highlighted the importance of respect and safety among drivers, emphasizing the need to navigate increasingly fast and narrow tracks responsibly.

“These cars are faster, and the tracks can be tight and bumpy,” Da Costa added. “We need to know how to go side by side. Today was a reminder of that, and I’m thankful Pascal is safe.”

Porsche Statement

TAG Heuer Porsche issued a statement following the incident, confirming Wehrlein’s condition:
“It is with huge relief that we are able to confirm that Pascal is okay after the on-track incident in race one of the new season. He’s been taken to hospital for some final checks.”
