Red Bull Drops the Bombshell: Sergio Perez Contract Extension Declared a ‘Flop’

ABU DHABI—Sergio Perez’s Formula 1 career at Red Bull hangs in the balance as the team confronts a season riddled with disappointment and unanswered questions about the Mexican driver’s future. With a staggering 275-point gap to teammate Max Verstappen and a lackluster campaign behind him, Perez’s seat for 2024 is now the hottest topic in F1 paddocks worldwide.

Red Bull’s Gamble on Perez Backfires

When Perez inked a multi-year extension in June, it was seen as a move to solidify the team’s dominance. Early-season podium finishes seemed to justify the decision, but the optimism quickly faded. Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner admitted that the renewal, meant to inspire Perez during a mid-season slump, failed to reignite the driver’s form.

“At the time, Sergio was performing extremely well,” Horner said. “Four podiums in the first five races—it felt like the right call. But obviously, it didn’t work. That’s just the reality of racing.”

Speculation Mounts as Season Ends

The rumors swirling around Red Bull’s decision-making intensified ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the season’s final race. Despite Perez’s insistence that his contract secures his seat through 2025, Horner remained noncommittal, stating the team would reassess its plans post-season.

“Checo remains our driver, and he’s under contract. But after the final race, we’ll sit down and discuss the future,” Horner explained. “Nobody wants to see him struggle like this—not the team, not the fans, and certainly not Sergio himself.”

Adding fuel to the speculation, Yuki Tsunoda is set to drive the RB20 in post-season testing. Horner downplayed the move as a routine exercise, but it has stoked talk of potential replacements within Red Bull’s talent-rich pipeline, including Tsunoda and other promising drivers like Isack Hadjar.

From Key Contributor to Question Mark

Perez’s journey with Red Bull, once filled with promise and success, now feels overshadowed by unmet expectations. He played a pivotal role in securing two Constructors’ Championships for the team and delivered five Grand Prix victories during his tenure. In 2022, he and Verstappen achieved the most successful pairing in Red Bull’s history, finishing first and second in the Drivers’ Championship.

“Checo’s been a tremendous team player,” Horner said. “He’s extremely popular within the team and has worked tirelessly over four years. His contributions can’t be ignored. But this season has been painful for him, and no one feels the frustration more deeply than Sergio himself.”

The Future of Red Bull’s Second Seat

Red Bull faces a tough decision: stick with a driver who has struggled to keep pace with Verstappen or gamble on a fresh face from their driver development program. Horner acknowledged the team’s wealth of talent but emphasized that Perez’s desires and performance will heavily influence the outcome.

“We’ve got a tremendous pool of talent,” Horner said. “But until we’re clear about Sergio and what he wants to do, everything else is speculation.”

What’s Next for Perez?

Perez enters Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix knowing that his performance could serve as a final statement in his defense. With his reputation as a skilled driver and team player hanging by a thread, Perez must deliver more than just a respectable finish—he needs a standout result to silence the doubters.
