IndyCar’s Final Track Test of 2024: Foster and Sowery Shine at Laguna Seca

The curtain has officially closed on IndyCar’s 2024 track action, with a two-car test session at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca marking the year’s final on-track outing. The day showcased two talented Britons, Louis Foster and Toby Sowery, as they laid down promising performances for their respective teams.

Foster’s Stellar Pace for RLL

Reigning Indy NXT champion Louis Foster took the wheel of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s No. 45 Honda, completing 89 laps and clocking an unofficial best time of 1m10.198s on his 85th lap. This performance underscores the young driver’s adaptability and speed as he prepares to step up into IndyCar.

Foster’s ability to push the car to its limits was a clear highlight, reinforcing why RLL is investing in his development. The Briton’s performance continues to validate the potential he displayed throughout his Indy NXT championship-winning season.

Sowery’s Redemption Run for Coyne

Toby Sowery, driving for Dale Coyne Racing, turned a massive 130 laps, the most of the session. His best time of 1m10.409s came on his 104th lap, marking a strong showing after a frustrating outing at The Thermal Club earlier in November, where mechanical gremlins limited his track time.

The 28-year-old Briton, who made three starts for Coyne this season with a best finish of 13th, is working tirelessly to secure a full-time seat in 2025. Reflecting on the test, Sowery highlighted the importance of such opportunities:

“This test was about completing everything we missed at Thermal, and looking at the lap count, we made up for it,” said Sowery. “Opportunities in IndyCar don’t come often, so I’m thankful for this chance to continue growing with the team.”

Testing Highlights:

  • Track: WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (2.2-mile road course)
  • Fastest Lap: Louis Foster – 1m10.198s (RLL Honda)
  • Most Laps Completed: Toby Sowery – 130 laps (DCR Honda)

Looking Ahead to 2025

For both Foster and Sowery, this test was more than just a chance to turn laps—it was an opportunity to solidify their case for full-time IndyCar seats. Foster’s seamless transition to the big leagues and Sowery’s perseverance with limited resources underscore their hunger and readiness for the challenge.

As Foster eyes a potential rookie campaign, and Sowery continues to chase sponsorship for a full-time seat, their performances at Laguna Seca have undoubtedly turned heads. With the 2025 season on the horizon, fans can expect these rising stars to continue making waves in IndyCar.

The next chapter of IndyCar begins in the new year, but for now, the final notes of 2024 have been played—and they struck a chord of promise for the future.
