FIA Turmoil: Wittich and Basarri Out due to Leadership Drama

In a surprising turn of events, Andrew Wheatley has stepped down from his position as the FIA’s Road Sport Director, marking the latest in a series of leadership changes at the governing body. Wheatley, who has been a key figure in rallying and off-road motorsport since taking the reins in March 2022, will be succeeded by his deputy, Emelia Abel, as the Junior Road Sport Director.

A Changing Guard in Rallying Leadership

Wheatley’s tenure included significant contributions to the development of rallying and off-road disciplines, having previously served as the FIA’s WRC category manager. In his farewell statement, Wheatley expressed pride in his time with the FIA and optimism about the future of rally and off-road motorsport.

“It has been a privilege and an education to work as part of the FIA team,” Wheatley said. “I am confident that the work being done now in the rally and off-road environments will create a very strong foundation for the future.”

His departure adds to a wave of recent FIA personnel changes, though it is the first major shake-up on the rallying side of the organization. The FIA offered no specific reason for Wheatley’s exit.

Abel’s Ascension and Fresh Vision

Stepping into the role, Emelia Abel brings a wealth of experience in rallying and off-road motorsport. Abel, who will be mentored by Dieter Rencken, aims to infuse fresh energy into the FIA’s rallying agenda. Both Abel and Rencken will report to FIA General Manager Alberto Villarreal, who expressed confidence in Abel’s leadership.

“Emelia’s vast experience in rallying and off-road competition will be a tremendous asset as we build towards a brighter future,” Villarreal said. “She will have my full support to reach the objectives we have set for the FIA World Rally Championship in particular.”

Abel echoed these sentiments, emphasizing her focus on innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability as the cornerstones of her approach.

“Rallying and off-road racing have always been at the heart of my passion for motor sport,” Abel said. “This is a unique opportunity to enhance the pinnacle of competition while broadening its appeal through grassroots initiatives.”

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Abel takes the reins at a critical juncture for the FIA. With rallying and off-road motorsport poised for growth, her appointment signals a renewed emphasis on innovation and grassroots development. As the sport navigates evolving fan expectations and sustainability imperatives, Abel’s leadership will be pivotal in shaping its future.

Her immediate focus is expected to be on strengthening the World Rally Championship (WRC) and exploring pathways for broader participation and engagement.

Looking Forward

This leadership transition marks a new chapter for the FIA’s rallying and off-road disciplines. While Wheatley leaves a legacy of resilience and development, Abel steps in with a vision to drive transformation and growth. The motorsport world will be watching closely as Abel sets the course for the future of rallying under the FIA’s banner.
