The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will witness the conclusion of one of Formula 1’s most iconic partnerships as Lewis Hamilton bids farewell to Mercedes after a 12-year journey that redefined the sport. Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025 marks the end of a collaboration that delivered unparalleled success, cementing the legacy of both the driver and the team.

A partnership that rewrote F1 history

Since joining Mercedes in 2013, Hamilton has amassed 105 Grand Prix victories, 104 pole positions, and six Drivers’ World Championships with the Silver Arrows, adding to his maiden title from 2008 with McLaren. Alongside eight Constructors’ Championships, the Hamilton-Mercedes era stands as the most successful driver-team collaboration in Formula 1 history.

Reflecting on this milestone, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff lauded Hamilton’s remarkable achievements and the profound impact of their partnership. “Six Drivers’ World Championships. Eight Constructors’ titles. 84 wins. 78 pole positions. 153 podium finishes. Together, we have set the benchmark,” Wolff said. “But Lewis’s legacy is far greater than just numbers. It’s a story that transcends the racetrack.”

A legacy of change and inclusion

Beyond the statistics, Hamilton’s influence extended into social and cultural realms, using his platform to champion diversity and inclusion within motorsport. Wolff highlighted Hamilton’s transformative role: “Lewis has been the catalyst for so much of the progress we’ve made in increasing diversity in our sport. We have been honoured to work alongside him, and his efforts will continue to inspire change beyond our time together.”

Abu Dhabi: a celebration and farewell

The Yas Marina Circuit will serve as both a competitive and emotional farewell for Hamilton and Mercedes. Wolff described the weekend as a tribute to their extraordinary journey: “This weekend is a celebration of everything we’ve accomplished together. Every lap of Lewis’s career has been powered by the three-pointed star. We will honour this story not just in Abu Dhabi but in the days to follow as we visit Kuala Lumpur, Stuttgart, and our factories in Brixworth and Brackley.”

Hamilton’s final race in Mercedes colours aims to close this chapter on a high note. “Our full focus is on the race. There is no better way to mark the end of our time together than with a strong performance on the track,” Wolff said. “Let’s add one more highlight to the reel and carry momentum into the next era.”

The road ahead for Mercedes

As Hamilton departs, Mercedes looks to its future with a new lineup. George Russell, who has grown into a formidable competitor, will take on the role of senior driver. Joining him will be rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli, touted as one of the most exciting talents in the sport. Wolff expressed confidence in the team’s direction: “Our future is bright, and 2025 marks a new chapter. But for now, our focus is on closing this one the right way.”

A farewell to remember

For Hamilton, this final race under the lights of Yas Marina will be a poignant moment. After 26 years powered by Mercedes engines, from karting to Formula 1, the transition to Ferrari signals the start of a new challenge. As the paddock reflects on the end of an era, Hamilton and Mercedes will aim for a performance befitting their legendary partnership.

Under the Abu Dhabi night sky, the Silver Arrows and their departing star will race one last time—together, united, and ready to celebrate a legacy that defined an era in Formula 1.
