General Motors Expands Tailgate Recall for Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD Trucks

In a significant move to address a recurring issue, General Motors (GM) has expanded its recall of Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks, adding 132,037 vehicles from the 2024 model year to its earlier recall of 323,232 units. The problem? Tailgates that can unexpectedly unlock and open, creating potential safety hazards.

Affected Models and Issue at Hand

The recall encompasses Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 trucks equipped with power-locking manual tailgates. Both cab configurations and drive types are included in the recall.

The culprit is water intrusion into the tailgate’s power switch assembly. This can disrupt the locking mechanism, potentially causing the tailgate to unlock and drop open. While the body control module is designed to keep the tailgate locked while the truck is in motion, GM warns that it’s possible for the gate to unlock, remain upright, and then fall once the truck starts moving again.

Potential Hazards

An unexpected tailgate opening poses risks, particularly if the truck bed contains loose cargo or if the vehicle is towing a trailer. In one reported incident involving a 2024 GMC Sierra HD 3500, the tailgate dropped and struck the trailer tongue, causing damage. Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries or crashes linked to the issue so far.

GM’s Investigation and Customer Complaints

GM launched an investigation after receiving 237 field complaints about unexpected tailgate openings. The automaker has since determined that water intrusion into the power lock switch is the root cause, prompting this expanded recall.

Recall Solution

To resolve the issue, GM will replace the tailgate switch assemblies with upgraded parts that are better sealed against water intrusion. Dealer notifications about specific affected vehicles have already begun, and GM plans to notify owners starting January 13, 2024.

Steps for Affected Owners

  1. Check for Recalls: Owners can verify if their vehicle is affected by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on GM’s recall website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall page.
  2. Schedule a Repair: Owners of affected vehicles should schedule a free repair with their local GM dealership.
  3. Exercise Caution: Until repairs are completed, owners are advised to secure their cargo carefully and monitor tailgate behavior.

Looking Ahead

This expanded recall underscores the importance of addressing even seemingly minor issues in large-scale vehicle manufacturing. GM’s proactive approach, combined with its commitment to owner safety, highlights the challenges automakers face in maintaining quality control across complex systems.

For Silverado and Sierra owners, the fix is free—but the inconvenience serves as a reminder of the critical role that routine recalls play in ensuring road safety.
