Zandvoort’s F1 Farewell: Dutch Grand Prix to End After 2025

The Dutch Grand Prix, a jewel of Formula 1’s recent calendar, will bid farewell after the 2025 season. This decision marks the conclusion of a remarkable chapter for Zandvoort, a circuit that has witnessed historic dominance by hometown hero Max Verstappen and, more recently, a stirring victory by McLaren’s Lando Norris in 2024.

Why the Dutch GP is Stepping Back

Dutch Grand Prix director Robert van Overdijk confirmed the race’s departure, explaining the decision to NOS. Despite its success and unique charm, the organisers opted against continuing beyond 2025 due to financial and strategic considerations.

“There were several options on the table to continue. We could rotate with other circuits, and there were also options to continue annually,” van Overdijk revealed. “In the end, it is our choice. Maybe the F1 top is surprised, but they certainly respect and understand us.”

The circuit, known for its eco-conscious initiatives and electric atmosphere, operates without government funding, relying solely on private resources. While its popularity soared with Verstappen’s rise and a loyal fan base, financial constraints made sustaining the event a daunting challenge.

A Message of Strength, Not Surrender

Van Overdijk emphasized that the decision was not born out of failure but rather as a proactive choice.

“You might say: if it’s successful, you just keep going? But it’s a message of strength. We’re going out with a bang,” he stated. “Of course, it also gives a melancholic feeling, but we’re especially proud.”

A Modern Legacy of Excellence

The Dutch Grand Prix returned to the calendar in 2021 after a 36-year hiatus, revitalized by Verstappen’s meteoric rise. The event became synonymous with the reigning champion’s dominance, as he secured three consecutive wins from 2021 to 2023. However, the 2024 edition saw a thrilling upset with Lando Norris taking a hard-fought victory, showcasing Zandvoort’s capacity for unpredictable, top-tier racing.

The race also earned global praise for its innovative approach to sustainability, offering eco-friendly travel options for fans and enhancing the fan experience with unique entertainment elements.

A Fond Farewell: What’s Next?

The final Dutch Grand Prix is scheduled for late August 2025, with reports suggesting a celebratory sprint race as part of the weekend. As Zandvoort prepares to close this modern F1 chapter, the event aims to leave a lasting legacy of thrilling racing, vibrant fan engagement, and a commitment to excellence.

What Zandvoort’s Departure Means for F1

Zandvoort’s absence will leave a void on the calendar, especially for Verstappen’s fervent Orange Army. Its departure highlights the challenges independent circuits face in a sport increasingly dominated by government-funded venues. While the F1 schedule continues to expand globally, Zandvoort’s success sets a high benchmark for future additions to the calendar.

As the sport prepares to say goodbye to one of its most atmospheric circuits, fans can look forward to one last electrifying chapter in the Netherlands, where Zandvoort’s dunes will echo with the roar of F1 cars for the final time.
