Esteban Ocon Breaks Silence on Abrupt Alpine Departure: “Not How I Wanted Things to End”

Esteban Ocon has expressed disappointment and regret over his sudden departure from Alpine ahead of the 2024 Formula 1 season finale in Abu Dhabi. The Frenchman, who has been a cornerstone of the Enstone-based team for the past five seasons, was replaced by Jack Doohan for the final race—a decision that allows Ocon to focus on his upcoming move to Haas.

A Sudden Farewell

The announcement earlier this week confirmed that Ocon would not compete in Abu Dhabi, marking an abrupt end to his tenure with Alpine. The decision comes as the team transitions to Doohan, who is set to partner Nico Hülkenberg in 2025.

“This is not how I wanted things to end,” Ocon admitted in a heartfelt statement on social media. “I was looking forward to racing one last time with the team and personally saying goodbye to everyone.”

Ocon also shared an image of a tribute helmet he had planned to use in Abu Dhabi, showcasing his intention to honor his time with the team.

Reflecting on the Memories

Despite a challenging 2024 season, Ocon looked back fondly on his years with Alpine, highlighting key moments like his victories in Bahrain, Hungary, and Brazil, as well as the team’s fourth-place finish in the Constructors’ Championship in 2022.

“I leave Alpine/Renault with great memories and the pride of having delivered the team’s best results since its return to the sport,” Ocon wrote. “Feeling that sense of achievement and joy alongside the team is what I will take away with me.”

While acknowledging the struggles of the current season, particularly in its latter half, Ocon emphasized his unwavering effort:

“It has not been an easy year on track, but I do not regret a single thing knowing I gave it 100% every single session. Like I always have.”

An Emotional Goodbye

Ocon also expressed gratitude to the mechanics, engineers, and staff at Alpine’s Enstone and Viry-Châtillon facilities, many of whom he considers friends. However, he lamented not having the opportunity for a proper farewell.

“To the hundreds of hard-working men and women at Enstone and Viry, I apologize that I will not be able to come see you in person. As you know, the plan was always to race one last time this weekend and personally say goodbye to you all next week.”

Ocon concluded his statement with a message of support for his successor, Jack Doohan, wishing him well as he steps into the spotlight at Abu Dhabi.

A New Chapter Ahead

Ocon’s move to Haas marks a significant transition in his career, as Alpine continues its battle with Haas over sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship. His departure from the team he’s called home for much of his F1 career underscores the cutthroat nature of the sport.

While Ocon’s tenure with Alpine ends under less-than-ideal circumstances, his contributions to the team’s success will not be forgotten. As he prepares to embark on a new journey with Haas, the Frenchman will undoubtedly aim to prove his value on the grid in 2025.
