In a move that has sent shockwaves through the rallying world, reigning WRC2 champion Sami Pajari has unveiled his co-driver for his much-anticipated debut season in the World Rally Championship’s top tier. The 22-year-old Finnish sensation, who recently clinched the WRC2 title in Japan, has turned to a familiar face for his Rally1 journey — none other than veteran co-driver Marko Salminen.

A Shocking Split and a Bold Choice

This announcement comes hot on the heels of Pajari’s surprising split from Enni Mälkönen, his trusted partner in conquering the WRC2 championship. The sudden separation raised eyebrows across the motorsport community, especially given their undeniable success together. Mälkönen, who had been by Pajari’s side since 2022, expressed her shock and disappointment at the abrupt decision, describing it as a “tough pill to swallow.”

Pajari, meanwhile, acknowledged the controversy but stood firm, emphasizing his commitment to making bold decisions in pursuit of his career goals. “It wasn’t an easy choice, and I deeply respect Enni. However, this is a critical step as I prepare for my Rally1 debut,” Pajari stated.

Reuniting with a Winning Formula

Pajari’s choice of Salminen isn’t just a shot in the dark — it’s a reunion steeped in past glory. The duo previously captured the Junior WRC title in 2021, showcasing a chemistry that could be instrumental in navigating the high-stakes world of Rally1. At 46, Salminen brings a wealth of experience, having co-driven for notable talents like Teemu Suninen and worked extensively within Toyota’s Challenge Program.

Salminen’s return to Pajari’s side marks a significant shift, signaling the young driver’s readiness to tackle the pressures of top-tier rallying. The duo will debut their renewed partnership at the Monza Rally Show, piloting the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 in what promises to be a thrilling preview of their 2025 campaign.

Toyota’s Big Gamble

Toyota Gazoo Racing has placed a massive bet on Pajari, promoting him to its Rally1 program. The move is part of a broader strategy to cultivate young talent and secure the team’s future dominance. With Salminen in the passenger seat, Toyota is banking on the pair’s proven synergy to make an immediate impact.

Eyes on Abu Dhabi and Beyond

As the motorsport world gears up for Pajari’s first Rally1 season, all eyes are on the young Finn and his veteran co-driver. The stakes are higher than ever, with Toyota’s high expectations and the pressure of competing against the world’s best rally drivers. Pajari’s meteoric rise, coupled with his fearless decision-making, makes him one of the most electrifying talents to watch in 2025.

The Road Ahead

Pajari and Salminen face a daunting challenge, but their shared history of success could be the X-factor in this high-octane equation. Whether they can replicate their Junior WRC magic on the Rally1 stage remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Sami Pajari’s WRC journey is off to a headline-grabbing start.

Stay tuned as the rallying world braces for what could be the beginning of a new Finnish dynasty in the World Rally Championship!
