Ty Gibbs Gets New Crew Chief: JGR Shakes Up Cup Lineup for 2025

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) is entering 2025 with a bold internal restructuring to revitalize its NASCAR Cup Series performance, highlighted by the promotion of Xfinity Series crew chief Tyler Allen to lead Ty Gibbs’ No. 54 Toyota team.

With five championship-less seasons in the Cup Series, the Toyota powerhouse is making significant changes to its lineup. Former No. 54 crew chief Chris Gayle has been elevated to Competition Director, while Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 team will now be overseen by Chris Lambert. These moves are part of JGR’s aggressive strategy to reignite its winning ways.

Tyler Allen Steps Into the Spotlight

At the center of the shake-up is Allen, a JGR veteran who spent the last decade rising through the ranks. Initially slated to remain with Gibbs in the Xfinity Series for 2025, Allen’s Cup Series promotion is a testament to his proven leadership and deep technical knowledge. Having worked as a race engineer alongside celebrated crew chief Adam Stevens in 2019, Allen has gained experience that now sets the stage for his Cup debut.

“This opportunity has been a dream of mine since starting here at JGR 10 years ago,” Allen said. “I’m thankful for the support and guidance I’ve received from my mentors, teammates, and everyone along the way.”

Allen inherits a challenging yet exciting project. Ty Gibbs, the 2022 Xfinity Series champion and a rising star in NASCAR, has shown promise but has yet to score a Cup Series victory. Allen’s task will be to turn potential into performance and secure the No. 54 team’s first win in the Next-Gen era.

Building on Gibbs’ Potential

Allen is optimistic about Gibbs’ trajectory. The young driver has delivered flashes of brilliance in his two Cup seasons, and Allen aims to capitalize on that speed and refine the team’s racecraft.

“Ty has shown a lot of speed and potential the last two years, and I look forward to building on that experience to get the 54 car in victory lane,” Allen remarked.

This new pairing brings a fresh dynamic to the No. 54 camp. Gibbs’ recent takeover of ownership for the No. 54 Xfinity Series team adds an extra layer of responsibility to the 22-year-old driver’s shoulders, but it also underscores his growing influence within the JGR organization.

High Stakes for JGR in 2025

The 2025 season is a critical juncture for JGR and the No. 54 team. The absence of a Cup Series victory in the Next-Gen era has left the team under scrutiny, and further winless seasons could lead to questions about JGR’s strategic direction. With Allen at the helm, the No. 54 crew is poised to make their mark—or face increased pressure to deliver results.

For JGR, this isn’t just about elevating a promising crew chief or nurturing young talent. It’s about solidifying their legacy and proving that the organization can adapt and thrive in the ever-evolving NASCAR landscape.

Eyes on Victory Lane

The upcoming season presents both immense opportunities and significant risks for Allen and Gibbs. With their shared ambition and the full support of JGR, the duo hopes to transform the No. 54 team into a Cup contender. Anything less than a visit to victory lane in 2025 will leave fans and critics alike questioning whether JGR’s sweeping changes were enough to reignite the fire that once made them dominant.
