Carlos Sainz Slams Ferrari’s Lost Opportunity in Qatar GP as Constructors’ Title Slips Away

Carlos Sainz minced no words after the Qatar Grand Prix, expressing frustration over Ferrari’s missed opportunity to gain crucial ground in the 2024 Constructors’ Championship battle against McLaren. While the Scuderia narrowed the points gap to 21, Sainz’s puncture and ill-timed safety car intervention cost Ferrari a chance to maximize its result, leaving them with a daunting task heading into the Abu Dhabi finale.

Sainz: “We Lost More Than We Gained”

Running comfortably behind teammate Charles Leclerc in a competitive position, Sainz’s race unraveled when he suffered a puncture at the final corner. Forced to limp back to the pits, the Spaniard lost precious time. His misfortune was compounded when the safety car was deployed just as he exited the pit lane, further shuffling the order and dropping him to sixth.

“I think today we lost more than we gained,” Sainz said post-race. “We were running in a good position behind Charles. Then I had a puncture in the last corner and had to do a full lap on a punctured tire. The safety car came out as I came out of the pits, so I lost a lot of positions.”

Despite these setbacks, Sainz salvaged valuable points, but it was a bittersweet result for Ferrari.

Leclerc’s Runner-Up Finish Not Enough

Charles Leclerc’s strong second-place finish behind Max Verstappen and ahead of Oscar Piastri kept Ferrari’s title hopes alive. However, the team needed a bigger haul to close the gap to McLaren significantly. The Prancing Horse still faces a 21-point deficit with just one race remaining.

Ferrari Boss Fred Vasseur: “It’s a Big Ask”

Team Principal Fred Vasseur acknowledged the uphill battle Ferrari faces in Abu Dhabi, admitting the team didn’t anticipate the Constructors’ Championship fight would go down to the wire.

“I haven’t done the maths—is it 29? No, 21 to McLaren?” Vasseur joked. “Haha, I don’t think we’ve ever recovered so many points. We certainly didn’t expect it. But we’ll fully focus on that in Abu Dhabi.”

Despite the odds, Vasseur emphasized Ferrari’s determination to take the fight to McLaren in the season finale.

What’s Next for Ferrari?

The Yas Marina Circuit presents one final opportunity for Ferrari to turn the tables on McLaren. Both Sainz and Leclerc will need flawless performances to bridge the gap, while hoping McLaren stumbles. However, McLaren’s consistent pace and strong teamwork throughout the season make it a formidable opponent.

“Certainly, Charles and I will push to the limit,” Sainz said. “But McLaren’s lead is significant, and we’ll need a perfect weekend to even have a chance.”

Conclusion: Ferrari’s Last Stand

The Qatar Grand Prix highlighted Ferrari’s resilience but also underscored the fine margins that define Formula 1. With the Constructors’ Championship slipping further from their grasp, the Scuderia heads to Abu Dhabi knowing that only a monumental effort can deliver the title. For Carlos Sainz, the final race offers a shot at redemption after a weekend of frustration.
