RB team boss Laurent Mekies has expressed strong confidence in Yuki Tsunoda’s readiness for a potential promotion to the Red Bull Racing team, suggesting the Japanese driver’s consistent performances in 2024 could sway skeptics at Red Bull’s senior team.

As Sergio Perez’s struggles persist, Red Bull is evaluating its driver lineup for 2025, with decisions expected after the season finale. While Liam Lawson has been seen as the frontrunner to replace Perez if a change occurs, Mekies believes Tsunoda’s stellar form and development could shift Red Bull’s perspective.

Tsunoda’s Case for Promotion

  • Consistent Results: Tsunoda’s standout qualifying efforts, including third in Brazil and seventh in Las Vegas, demonstrate his growth and adaptability.
  • Team Contribution: He has scored 30 of RB’s 45 points this season, providing the backbone of the team’s midfield campaign.
  • Development: Mekies highlighted Tsunoda’s leap in maturity and performance in 2024, calling it a “surprise to everyone.”

“When I see Yuki again, performing at that level like he did in the last few races, I think it was all together an outstanding season from his side,” Mekies said. “I think he has made a step this season that nobody could forecast, and it’s something he should be proud of.”

Overcoming Red Bull’s Reservations

Red Bull has expressed skepticism about Tsunoda’s temperament and consistency, with Mekies acknowledging this as a barrier to his promotion. However, he believes that Tsunoda’s recent performances could alter opinions within Red Bull’s leadership.

“We are in a business where everybody looks at the results,” Mekies explained. “The second a driver starts to perform or to outperform compared to the expectations, then everybody will change their opinions very, very fast.”

Abu Dhabi Test: A Crucial Opportunity

Tsunoda will drive the RB20 at the post-season test in Abu Dhabi, a significant opportunity to showcase his abilities to Red Bull Racing directly. Mekies emphasized the importance of this test in Red Bull’s evaluation process.

“It’s very important for our drivers to get a chance into the bigger team, into our brother team,” Mekies said. “It’s one of our key DNA aspects for this team, to grow our drivers and make them attractive enough for Red Bull Racing.”

Mekies’ Final Assessment

Mekies asserted that Tsunoda is ready for a faster car and a top team, citing his development and ability to deliver results under pressure.

“A guy that has put the car in P7 or in P3 in the last two races… of course, I think he’s ready for a faster car and a faster team or a bigger team,” Mekies concluded.

As Red Bull mulls its 2025 lineup, Tsunoda’s performances and upcoming Abu Dhabi test could make a compelling case for his promotion to partner Max Verstappen in the senior team.
