Helmut Marko seems to have gone too far, claiming that Lando Norris is mentally weak and that this will cost him the championship

The dust may have settled on the 2024 Formula 1 championship, but the rivalry between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris is far from over. After a thrilling season-long battle, Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, leaving Norris and McLaren to settle for second place. Now, the two are exchanging sharp words off the track, adding a new chapter to their fiery competition.

Verstappen’s Bold Claim Sparks Controversy

The drama began when Verstappen confidently stated he would have clinched the title much earlier had he been driving Norris’ McLaren. Known for his no-holds-barred attitude, the Dutchman suggested his skill would have been enough to dominate the season even with McLaren’s machinery.

“I know perfectly well what I can and cannot do,” Verstappen told reporters. “We don’t need to spend time on trying to slag people off or whatever.”

Norris Fires Back

Norris, who fought valiantly in his maiden title campaign, wasn’t about to let Verstappen’s comments slide. The Brit dismissed Verstappen’s claim outright, asserting that the McLaren team’s journey from being the fourth-fastest car at the start of the season to a legitimate title contender was a monumental achievement in itself.

“He should start doing comedy or something,” Norris quipped when asked about Verstappen’s assertion. “He can say whatever he wants, but it’s just not true.”

Verstappen’s Retort: Confidence Over Controversy

Verstappen doubled down on his stance, brushing off Norris’ response with characteristic confidence. While maintaining his focus on the upcoming races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, the 27-year-old emphasized that he sees little value in dwelling on hypotheticals or engaging in a verbal back-and-forth.

“We don’t need to talk about [whether Norris lost gracefully],” Verstappen added. “I’ve done what I came here to do.”

A Rivalry That Won’t Quit

The 2024 season highlighted Norris’ emergence as Verstappen’s most consistent challenger, with McLaren’s meteoric rise putting them in direct contention with Red Bull. While Verstappen ultimately triumphed, the narrow margins and intense on-track battles between the two have fueled one of the most captivating rivalries in modern F1.

What’s Next?

With two races left in the season, the Verstappen-Norris saga is far from over. The animosity off the track only adds fuel to the fire as both drivers prepare to go head-to-head in Qatar. For fans, the brewing tension sets the stage for an electrifying end to an already dramatic year in Formula 1.
