Domenicali’s Promise to Hamilton: F1’s Return to Africa Before His Retirement

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has reportedly made a significant promise to seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton: to ensure that Formula 1 returns to Africa before the Mercedes driver retires from the sport. This pledge aligns with Hamilton’s long-standing advocacy for F1 to expand its presence on the African continent.

Hamilton’s Vision: A Race in Africa

Lewis Hamilton has been vocal about the need for Formula 1 to reconnect with Africa, a continent with deep motorsport roots but which has been absent from the F1 calendar since 1993. The last African Grand Prix was held at South Africa’s Kyalami Circuit, and Hamilton has championed its return as part of the sport’s global expansion.

Speaking about Domenicali’s commitment, Hamilton expressed optimism and appreciation:
“I’ve been speaking to him so much about getting the race in Africa, and he’s really the one that’s promised he’s going to make sure we get this done before I leave here. That’s important.”

Domenicali’s Impact on F1

Under Stefano Domenicali’s leadership, Formula 1 has seen a remarkable evolution, with new races in diverse markets like Miami and Las Vegas, and discussions about potential future venues. Domenicali has also emphasized the sport’s commitment to inclusivity, a cause Hamilton holds close to his heart.

Formula 1 recently announced its first-ever diversity and inclusivity charter, with Hamilton’s efforts credited for driving the initiative. Hamilton acknowledged Domenicali’s role:
“And also just being conscious of the diversity work that we’ve been doing as well.”

Rumors of Domenicali’s Exit

Speculation has surfaced about Domenicali potentially leaving his role as F1 CEO to lead MotoGP, following Liberty Media’s acquisition of the motorcycle racing series. While Domenicali has not addressed these rumors, Hamilton made it clear he hopes the Italian leader remains at the helm of F1:
“I really hope that Stefano doesn’t step down because he’s been fantastic and he knows the sport as well as anyone else.”

The Road Ahead: Africa’s Role in F1’s Future

The prospect of Formula 1 returning to Africa would mark a significant milestone for the sport, reconnecting it with an untapped and passionate audience. A race in Africa would also reflect F1’s commitment to global inclusivity and growth.

As the motorsport world watches Domenicali’s next moves, Hamilton’s advocacy for Africa and Domenicali’s pledge to make it happen underscores the sport’s ability to inspire change and broaden its horizons. With Hamilton’s career edging closer to its twilight, time is of the essence to fulfill this promise and bring the African Grand Prix back to life.
