Toyota’s Celica Revival: A Legendary Name Gears Up for a Comeback

For over a year, Toyota has been teasing the automotive world with hints about the return of the iconic Celica, and it seems the long-rumored resurrection is edging closer to reality. During the 2024 Rally Japan festivities, Toyota executives dropped the most significant clue yet, with Hiroki Nakajima, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, boldly stating, “We will make the Celica.”

A Long-Awaited Comeback

The buzz around the Celica’s return began with Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s chairman and an avid motorsport enthusiast. In 2023, he revealed his personal desire to see the Celica nameplate revived. This sentiment was echoed by Toyota president Tsuneji Sato, who publicly shared his enthusiasm for bringing back one of Toyota’s most beloved sports cars.

Toyota’s Grip anime series further stoked the excitement earlier this year, briefly showcasing a “Celica Mk8” on a whiteboard, fueling speculation that the automaker was serious about reviving the name.

Now, Nakajima’s comments at the Rally Japan event have all but confirmed Toyota’s intentions. Although the CTO seemed to backtrack slightly after his statement, suggesting he might have let the news slip prematurely, it marks the most concrete indication yet that the Celica is on its way back.

What to Expect from the New Celica

While Toyota has not officially revealed details, here’s what industry insiders and fans anticipate:

1. Shared DNA with the GR Lineup

The new Celica is expected to align with Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) performance division, which has reinvigorated Toyota’s sporty offerings with models like the GR Supra, GR86, and GR Yaris. A Celica developed under the GR badge would likely emphasize a lightweight chassis, sharp handling, and engaging performance.

2. A Turbocharged Powertrain

Toyota is reportedly working on a new family of four-cylinder engines, including 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter variants. The 2.0-liter turbocharged unit, already tested in a stripped-down Lexus IS prototype, is a prime candidate for the Celica. This engine would likely deliver the kind of punch expected from a sports car bearing the Celica name.

3. A Focus on Affordability

Historically, the Celica has been positioned as an accessible entry point into Toyota’s performance lineup. If it follows the philosophy of the GR86, the new Celica could offer enthusiasts an affordable alternative to the Supra.

4. Styling and Heritage

Expect the Celica to draw design cues from its predecessors while embracing modern aerodynamics. Toyota’s Grip anime series has hinted at sleek, aggressive styling that could resonate with a new generation of fans while honoring the car’s iconic legacy.

More Excitement in Toyota’s Sports Car Pipeline

The Celica’s rumored return isn’t the only thing grabbing attention. Toyota is also teasing next-generation updates for its current lineup:

  • GR86 Mk3: Likely to retain its rear-wheel-drive layout, with speculation around a turbocharged engine to address enthusiasts’ long-standing requests for more power.
  • Supra Mk6: A potential redesign to further evolve Toyota’s flagship sports coupe.
  • MR2 Mk4: A revived mid-engine sports car, bringing back another beloved Toyota classic.
  • GR GT3: A dedicated race car with a street-legal Lexus equivalent, tentatively called the LFR.

Toyota’s Commitment to Sports Cars

Toyota’s move to expand its performance lineup underscores its commitment to preserving and advancing its legacy in sports cars. By reviving iconic names like the Celica, Toyota is not only honoring its past but also positioning itself as a leader in the future of accessible performance vehicles.

The Celica’s return—if officially confirmed—would mark a significant moment for car enthusiasts worldwide. As fans eagerly await more details, all eyes will be on Toyota at the 2025 Dakar Rally, where further announcements are expected. The legend of the Celica is poised to continue, combining modern engineering with a name that resonates with generations of driving enthusiasts.
