Lewis Hamilton Admits He Considered Quitting Mercedes After Brazilian GP Disaster

Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he contemplated walking away from racing with Mercedes after a disastrous outing at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion, who is set to join Ferrari in 2025, reflected on the frustration of a challenging 2024 season but vowed to finish strong in his final races with the Silver Arrows.

“I Didn’t Want to Come Back”

The Brazilian GP marked a low point in Hamilton’s turbulent season. Eliminated in Q1 and managing only a P10 finish, the Briton’s disappointment was palpable. In a cryptic post-race message, he described it as a shame to end his last Brazilian race with Mercedes in such a manner. Now, he has shed light on the emotions behind those words.

“In the moment, that’s how I felt, like I didn’t really want to come back after that weekend,” Hamilton admitted. “It’s frustrating when you have a season like this. But I’m pretty sure I won’t have another season like this, or at least I’ll work towards not having one.”

Despite the setback, Hamilton affirmed his resolve, committing to give everything in the final three races of the season. “I’m here, I’m standing strong, and I’m going to give it absolutely everything for these last few races.”

A Rollercoaster Season

Mercedes has experienced a rollercoaster of performance in 2024, achieving two race wins but falling short of championship contention. For Hamilton, the inconsistency has been particularly disheartening, especially in a year overshadowed by his impending departure to Ferrari.

While some questioned Hamilton’s performance during the team’s struggles, he dismissed criticism as nothing new. “I’ve been around this game for a long time. There’s been so many things said about me, so many micro-aggressions,” he said. “Nothing can take me down.”

Hamilton credited his long-standing partnership with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff for providing support amid the challenges. “My boss has always been supportive. We’ve achieved a lot together, and through it all, I’ve learned to weather the storm.”

Farewell Preparations Begin

Hamilton’s departure marks the end of a 12-year era with Mercedes, a partnership that delivered six of his seven world titles and cemented his place as one of Formula 1’s all-time greats. The team is reportedly planning a massive farewell celebration at the season finale in Abu Dhabi, which promises to be an emotional affair for both Hamilton and Mercedes.

“I know it will be a tough goodbye,” Hamilton admitted. “But I’m focused on making the most of these last races with the team that has been my family for so long.”

Looking Ahead to Ferrari

As Hamilton prepares for his move to Ferrari, the pressure to perform in the iconic red car will be immense. Yet, the Briton seems eager for a fresh challenge, motivated to prove that he can still compete at the highest level as he nears 40.

For now, though, Hamilton’s focus remains on finishing his Mercedes chapter on a high note. With three races to go, including the emotional finale in Abu Dhabi, the F1 world will watch closely as one of the sport’s most legendary partnerships comes to an end.
