Formula E Hits the Fast Lane: Modified Jeddah F1 Circuit to Host February E-Prix

Formula E is gearing up for a bold new challenge as it shifts from Diriyah to a specially modified version of Formula 1’s Jeddah Corniche Circuit for its Saudi Arabian E-Prix next February. This electrifying change promises a high-speed showdown on the banks of the Red Sea, with the redesigned track featuring four brand-new chicanes to test the skills of the all-electric grid.

A Circuit Transformed

The Formula E version of the Jeddah track will span approximately 2.2 miles, incorporating significant modifications for the series’ unique demands. Key updates include:

  • New Chicane Complexes: Between the F1 circuit’s usual Turns 25 and 26, two tight chicane sections will be introduced.
  • Modified Run to the Finish Line: Two more chicanes—one left/right/left and a reverse right/left/right—will challenge drivers before the start/finish straight.
  • F1’s Signature First Turn: The lap will begin with the same iconic opening corner used in Formula 1.

These changes aim to enhance braking zones and improve lift-and-coast efficiency for Formula E cars, a crucial factor for energy management in the series.

Drivers and Teams Weigh In

The reaction from drivers has been mixed, reflecting excitement for the new venue and nostalgia for Diriyah’s much-loved layout.

  • Sebastien Buemi (Envision Racing):
“It’s a huge track and very wide with few corners. It could feel a bit like Portland, but it might lose the character of Diriyah, which was really challenging. The infrastructure will be amazing, but it’ll have a different vibe.”
  • Nyck de Vries (ABT Cupra, former F1 driver):
“Jeddah is going to be a different experience. I loved racing there in Formula 1, so I’m excited to see how it plays out in Formula E.”

Why the Switch?

Diriyah, the original Saudi Arabian home of Formula E, has hosted 11 races since 2018. However, construction projects in the area and ongoing track challenges, such as construction dust and a restrictive single racing line, have prompted the move.

The CBX Group, Formula E’s Saudi promoter, evaluated alternative locations within Riyadh before settling on Jeddah. Carlo Boutgay, CBX Group’s leader, highlighted Jeddah’s readiness to host world-class motorsport events as a key factor in the decision.

A Nod to Diriyah’s Legacy

Diriyah was the birthplace of Formula E’s Gen2 era, with unforgettable moments such as Antonio Felix da Costa’s BMW Andretti win in 2018. Its tight, technical layout pushed drivers to their limits and became a fan-favorite. De Vries and Pascal Wehrlein claimed two victories apiece at Diriyah, cementing their legacies at the venue.

Looking Ahead

The Jeddah E-Prix will showcase a fresh take on Formula E racing, blending the excitement of street racing with the grandeur of a Formula 1-grade circuit. While the track’s wide layout and reduced complexity may shift the racing dynamics, it opens the door to a new chapter for the sport in Saudi Arabia.

As Formula E charges into Jeddah, fans can expect a spectacle like no other, setting the stage for a thrilling season ahead!
