Pierre Gasly Jabs Lando Norris Over Title Struggles Against Verstappen: ‘It’s Not Easy to Beat Max’

As the Formula 1 world descends on Las Vegas for the penultimate showdown of the 2024 season, Alpine driver Pierre Gasly has stirred the pot with a cheeky dig at Lando Norris’s faltering title challenge against reigning champion Max Verstappen. While praising Verstappen’s brilliance, Gasly couldn’t resist pointing out the struggles Norris has faced in his bid to dethrone the Dutchman.

“It’s Not Easy to Beat Max”

Gasly, Verstappen’s former teammate at Red Bull, knows all too well the difficulty of going wheel-to-wheel with the three-time world champion. In his comments ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Gasly praised Verstappen’s incredible season but subtly highlighted Norris’s inability to capitalize on his chances.

“Fair play to him, it’s not easy to beat Max. I think Lewis [Hamilton] and Lando can agree to that,” Gasly remarked. “He’s just put on an extremely strong season again.”

The Frenchman acknowledged Verstappen’s dominance, crediting his extraordinary driving skills for masking the flaws in Red Bull’s occasionally inconsistent RB20 car.

“If we win the title again this year, it will be mainly down to Max,” Gasly added. “With his exceptional driving, he has covered up the phases in which the car was really not good.”

Norris’s “Timid” Title Challenge

Norris, who trails Verstappen by 62 points with just three races remaining, has been praised for his consistency but criticized for missing key opportunities to take the fight to Verstappen. Gasly’s remarks appear to underscore this sentiment, suggesting Norris’s title bid has lacked the cutting edge required to overcome the Dutchman’s dominance.

The McLaren driver has endured moments of bad luck and strategic missteps but has also been outmaneuvered by Verstappen in key battles this season. Las Vegas, with its high-speed straights and ample overtaking zones, could provide the perfect stage for Norris to prove Gasly wrong—or reinforce his critique.

Verstappen’s Relentless Dominance

Verstappen’s campaign has been nothing short of masterful. With 393 points to his name, he has outclassed the field in both dry and wet conditions, showcasing his ability to extract maximum performance from his car in any situation. Even Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko was quick to admit that Verstappen’s individual brilliance has been the driving force behind their success this year.

“Our car was fast in the dry in Brazil, although Max was in a class of his own in the rain,” Marko said. “With his aggressive nature and exceptional skills, he has covered up the times when the car wasn’t performing.”

The Vegas Showdown: Norris vs. Verstappen

With the glittering backdrop of Las Vegas providing the stage, the Norris-Verstappen rivalry is set for another chapter. The circuit’s unique layout, featuring several high-speed straights and sharp 90-degree corners, is tailor-made for overtaking and could ignite fireworks between the two title contenders.

While Verstappen’s title seems all but secured, Norris still has a chance to remind the paddock why he belongs in the conversation. A strong showing in Vegas could help silence critics like Gasly, while another missed opportunity may fuel further doubts about Norris’s ability to challenge the sport’s elite.

“Prove Them Wrong” or “Reinforce the Narrative”?

Gasly’s jab may have been playful, but it reflects the broader narrative surrounding Norris’s 2024 campaign: potential without payoff. The Las Vegas Grand Prix could be Norris’s last big opportunity to change that perception before the season ends.

Whether the McLaren driver rises to the challenge or Verstappen adds another chapter to his legend, one thing is certain—Sin City is about to witness a high-stakes battle for Formula 1 supremacy.
