Franco Colapinto on Red Bull’s Radar for 2025: A Star in the Making?

Red Bull Racing is reportedly exploring a bold move to secure the services of Franco Colapinto, the young Argentine talent currently making waves at Williams. The potential signing comes amidst ongoing speculation about Red Bull’s 2025 driver lineup, with Sergio Perez’s future increasingly uncertain.

Colapinto’s Meteoric Rise

Initially not considered a Formula 1 contender, Colapinto’s rise has been meteoric. After stepping into Williams’ lineup mid-season due to Logan Sargeant’s struggles, Colapinto quickly proved his worth. Despite a limited number of races, the 21-year-old has delivered consistent performances, including two points finishes and no results lower than 12th, turning him into one of the sport’s hottest prospects.

However, with Williams locking in Carlos Sainz alongside Alex Albon for 2025, Colapinto is set to lose his seat at the Grove-based team, leaving him in search of opportunities elsewhere.

Red Bull’s Struggles and Colapinto’s Appeal

Red Bull’s recent downturn, combined with Sergio Perez’s underwhelming performances—scoring only 19 points in the last seven races—has left the team third in the Constructors’ standings. With Perez’s contract running through 2026, Red Bull faces a critical decision. Team Principal Christian Horner has been Perez’s staunchest defender but has hinted at “difficult decisions” following Perez’s disastrous home race in Mexico.

While Liam Lawson remains a strong candidate to move up to the senior team, Colapinto offers an intriguing alternative. Red Bull’s openness to recruiting talent outside its own driver pool, as Horner recently acknowledged, positions Colapinto as a prime target.

“Colapinto is an interesting driver. He is surprisingly much better than everyone thought in Formula 2,” Horner told AMuS. “I would be a bad team leader if I didn’t find out if he was available.”

The Williams Factor

Colapinto’s contractual ties to Williams complicate matters, with Team Principal James Vowles indicating that any deal to release the driver would come at a substantial price. Despite this, Vowles has shown a pragmatic approach, suggesting he’s open to discussions if Williams cannot offer Colapinto a seat.

“If Williams cannot give me a race seat, I think the normal thing is that they allow me to go somewhere else,” Colapinto said when asked about the possibility of leaving.

Why Red Bull Should Bet on Colapinto

Colapinto’s appeal extends beyond his on-track abilities. The Buenos Aires native’s affable personality and growing fan base in Argentina have already provided Williams with a short-term sponsorship boost—a financial incentive Red Bull could capitalize on, especially if parting ways with Perez means losing his significant sponsor portfolio.

On the track, Colapinto’s consistency and ability to extract strong results in a midfield car suggest he could adapt well to Red Bull’s high-pressure environment. His calm demeanor and confidence, devoid of arrogance, make him a potential fit alongside Max Verstappen.

The Bigger Picture

Red Bull’s driver development program, once known for its ability to nurture elite talent, has faced criticism in recent years. A successful Colapinto acquisition could signal a return to form for the program, even if the driver isn’t a Red Bull “homegrown” product. With Perez’s seat increasingly under scrutiny, Colapinto provides a potential long-term solution to the team’s second-driver dilemma.

The Verdict

Red Bull faces a crucial decision for 2025, and Franco Colapinto represents a gamble worth considering. While costly to extricate him from Williams, his talent, marketability, and adaptability make him a compelling candidate to support Verstappen. If Red Bull can secure his services, Colapinto could be the fresh face to reignite the team’s dominance.
