Vikings Coordinator Interviews for New Job in NFC: Report

MINNESOTA VIKINGS COACH IMPRESSES AT SENIOR BOWL, INTERVIEWED BY NEW YORK GIANTS

In a surprising turn of events, Minnesota Vikings defensive pass game coordinator Daronte Jones has caught the attention of the New York Giants. Jones, who served as the defensive coordinator for the National team at the Senior Bowl, was interviewed on-site by the Giants for their defensive coordinator position. This news comes from a source close to the situation, as reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on February 4.

Jones, 45, has been with the Vikings for three seasons and was promoted to defensive passing game coordinator last year. He played a crucial role in implementing a new defensive scheme, similar to the one used by Brian Flores at LSU in 2021. This innovative scheme, featuring a six-man front with zone coverage, proved to be highly successful for the Vikings. In fact, their defense ranked first in expected points added (EPA) per play for 10 weeks last season.

When asked about the unique appearance of the scheme, Jones explained that it creates the illusion of one-on-one matchups without the presence of a post safety or Cover-2. However, he emphasized that it is indeed a strategic approach and not as straightforward as it may seem.

The Giants’ decision to interview Jones demonstrates their recognition of his impressive coaching abilities. It remains to be seen whether he will ultimately be offered the defensive coordinator position, but his performance at the Senior Bowl has certainly put him on the radar of NFL teams. As the offseason progresses, football enthusiasts will eagerly await updates on this developing story.

Daronte Jones, the defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings, has made quite an impact in his first season with the team. Joining in 2020, Jones was tasked with developing a young cornerback room after the franchise made the bold move of parting ways with three veteran cornerbacks. Despite the inexperience of the cornerbacks, the Vikings’ passing defense ranked ninth in the league through 12 weeks.

Jones has been praised for his ability to effectively communicate with the players and provide them with the necessary information without overwhelming them. He has focused on building a strong foundation and allowing the players to grow without handicapping them. The job of coaching defensive backs is known to be challenging, but Jones has passed the test with flying colors.

Former head coach Mike Zimmer of the Minnesota Vikings

Earlier this year, former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer broke his silence and expressed his desire to coach again. It seems that his wish may come true with the Dallas Cowboys. Zimmer recently interviewed for the Cowboys’ vacant defensive coordinator position. This would be a homecoming for Zimmer, as he previously served as an assistant coach for the Cowboys from 1994 to 2006, winning a Super Bowl in 1996.
