GM Recalls Nearly 462,000 Trucks and SUVs Over Transmission Issue That Could Lock Rear Wheels

General Motors has announced a major recall affecting 461,839 full-size trucks and SUVs equipped with diesel engines due to a transmission defect that could cause the rear wheels to lock up unexpectedly. The recall impacts multiple models across Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac brands, highlighting a significant safety concern.


“What Vehicles Are Affected?”

The recall spans 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models (1500, 2500, and 3500 trims) and includes the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra (2020-2022): The majority of affected vehicles.
  • Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe (2021): 6,383 units.
  • GMC Yukon (2021): 5,182 units.
  • Cadillac Escalade (2021): 1,502 units.

“The Issue Explained”

The problem stems from excessive wear on a transmission control valve, leading to harsh downshifts. In some cases, this could cause the rear wheels to lock up unexpectedly. While GM initially believed this condition wouldn’t last long enough to cause a loss of control, further analysis revealed otherwise.

A GM engineer flagged the issue in June 2024 after an incident involving a 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 towing a trailer. By mid-September, GM had identified 1,888 reports of potential lock-ups, including instances of property damage and three minor injuries related to vehicles sliding off the road.


“The Solution: A Software Fix”

Rather than replacing the faulty valves, GM plans to issue a software update that will:

  1. Monitor transmission wear and hard shifting for early signs of failure.
  2. Trigger a check engine light approximately 10,000 miles before a lock-up condition occurs.
  3. Limit the transmission to fifth gear if excessive wear is detected.

Dealer notifications for the recall have already begun, with owner notifications starting in December 2024.

GM advises owners of affected vehicles to:

  1. Watch for recall notifications starting in December.
  2. Schedule an appointment with their local GM dealership for the software update.
  3. Stay alert for transmission issues such as harsh shifting or unexpected behavior.

“Impact and Next Steps”

With nearly 462,000 vehicles impacted, this recall is one of GM’s largest in recent years. While the majority of affected vehicles are pickup trucks, smaller numbers of SUVs like the Escalade, Yukon, Suburban, and Tahoe are also included.

The recall underscores the importance of swift action to prevent further injuries or damage. GM’s software solution aims to mitigate risks without requiring hardware replacements, but owners are urged to act promptly.
