Toto Wolff Opens Up on Mercedes’ Pursuit of Max Verstappen: Is the F1 Superstar Destined for a Mercedes Move?

Toto Wolff worries about Andrea Kimi Antonelli being exposed to George Russell’s impressive abilities in Formula 1.

Toto Wolff is setting the stage for an exciting future at Mercedes, as he reveals the team’s plans for a homegrown 2025 F1 lineup. However, in a candid admission, Wolff also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the possibility of Max Verstappen ever making a move to the Silver Arrows—despite Mercedes’ well-documented interest in the reigning four-time champion.

This season has seen massive shifts at Mercedes, especially after the bombshell announcement that Lewis Hamilton will leave the team for Ferrari at the end of 2024. With Hamilton’s departure leaving a void at Mercedes, Wolff publicly declared that Verstappen was his top choice to fill the gap, despite the Dutchman being contracted to Red Bull until 2028.

Wolff, always known for his strategic thinking, attempted to capitalize on the “disruption” behind the scenes at Red Bull, hinting at the possibility of Verstappen using an exit clause in his contract. But with Verstappen on the brink of securing his fourth consecutive title with Red Bull, Wolff now seems to have tempered his pursuit of the superstar, acknowledging the likelihood that Verstappen will stay with Red Bull for at least the 2025 season.

Still, Wolff hasn’t closed the door on a future pursuit of Verstappen. On the High Performance Podcast, Wolff spoke candidly about his relationship with Verstappen and his family, revealing that the two camps remain on good terms despite the infamous 2021 title fight that ignited tensions between Mercedes and Red Bull. “We get on very well, not always in the visibility of the public eye,” Wolff said. “I’ve known Jos [Verstappen] for a long time. He’s my age, we have similar views on racing.”

With Verstappen’s decision to remain at Red Bull for now, Wolff has shifted his focus to Mercedes’ next generation of talent. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes’ promising junior driver, is set to partner George Russell for the 2025 season, marking a new chapter for the team. Wolff expressed excitement about the team’s new direction, saying, “It feels natural now to go to the next generation. Max is a great driver, and God knows what happens in the future, but having Kimi and George in the car, homegrown, real Mercedes juniors… I’m very much looking forward to that situation.”

While the door for Verstappen may not be fully shut, Mercedes is clearly preparing for the future with its young stars. Fans and pundits alike will continue to wonder whether Wolff’s long-term strategy could eventually lead to the F1 superstar swapping his Red Bull for Mercedes’ silver. But for now, the next generation of Mercedes talent appears to be the focus.
